Uruguay, officially the Oriental Republic of Uruguay is a country in the Southeastern part of South America.Uruguay is one of the most economically developed countries in South America.
Uruguayans are of predominantly European origin; an estimated 88% of the population is European Origin.Most Uruguayans of European ancestry are descendants of 19th and 20th century immigrants from Spain and Italy (about one-quarter of the population is of Italian origin) and, to a much lesser degree, from France and Britain.
Uruguay is the 2nd smallest Sovereign Nation in South America (after Suriname)with a land area of 176,214 km2 (68,037 sq miles)
Uruguay is one of the most economically developed countries in South America, with a high GDP Per Capita.
Uruguay becomes the 1st country in the Americas to achieve complete digital telephony coverage in 1997.
Uruguay was the 1st South American country to legalize same-sex and different-sex Civil Unions(also referred as Civil Partnerships similar to marriage beginning with Denmark in 1989) at a National level.
Uruguay is being ranked by ''Transparency International'' as the 2nd least corrupt country in Latin America (behind Chile)
In 2009, Uruguay became the 1st Nation in the world to provide every school child with a free laptop and internet.
Uruguay is divided into 19 Departments and each department elects its own authorities through a universal suffrage system.

Uruguay is a Presidential Representative Democratic Republic where the President of Uruguay is both the Head of State and Head of the Govt.and of a Multi-Party System.

The President of Uruguay is elected  by popular vote for a 5-year term without immediate reelection until after the same period after the cessation of office.

José Alberto "Pepe" Mujica Cordano(Broad Front -a Left Wing Coalition of Parties) is the 40th and Current President of Uruguay in office from March 01,2010 after winning the 2009 Uruguayan General Election by  securing 52% Votes and defeating Luis Alberto Lacalle(National Party)who got only 43% Votes

The General Assembly of Uruguay is Bi-cameral -
Chamber of Deputies has 99 members, elected for a five year term by proportional representation and
Chamber of Senators has 31 members, 30 members elected for a five year term by proportional representation  and the Vice-President.

Uruguay Legalises Abortion - Oct 17,2012

 

Uruguay has become the second country in Latin America, after communist Cuba, to legalise abortion for all women. 
In other Latin American countries, it is only allowed in cases of rape or health risk for the woman.
 
With a 17-14 majority, the Uruguayan Senate approved legislation that allows women to have an abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
