New Guinea(Papua Island)


Country Profile
New Guinea is the World's 2nd Larges Island after Greenland(covering a land area of 786,000 km2.)located in the in the Southwest Pacific Ocean.The current population of the island of New Guinea is about 7.5 million.
The island of New Guinea is divided politically into roughly equal halves  -

The Western Portion of the island was formerly a Dutch Colony,the Dutch East Indies and after decolonization is now two Indonesian  Provinces -
West Papua with Manokwari  as its capital and
Papua with the city of Jayapura as its capital.

The Eastern Part of the island forms the Mainland of Papua New Guinea  which has been an independent country since 1975( formerly the Territory of Papua and New Guinea Governed by Australia)
