A presidential election was held in Turkmenistan on Feb12, 2012 which was Turkmenistan's4th presidential election. The President of Turkmenistan, Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, has been re-elected for another term with a landslide majority.Election officials said he had secured more than 97% of the vote.He faced token opposition from seven other candidates in the presidential election.

Turkmenistan, one of the world’s most repressive states, has virtually cut itself off from the outside world ahead of its presidential election.The country has restricted entry across its land borders to foreigners and blocked many Western journalists from covering the election.
