2012 Maharashtra Civic Polls










Elections were  held on Thursday Feb 16,2012 for Thane, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Pimpri—Chinchwad, Solapur, Nashik, Akola, Amravati and Nagpur municipal corporations.

A total of 3.5 crore voters were registered to elect 1,244 councillors, including 624 women, in Mumbai(227 seats), Thane(130 seats), Ulhasnagar(78 seats), Pune(152 seats), Pimpri-Chinchwad(128 seats), Solapur(102 seats), Nashik(122 seats), Akola(73 seats), Amravati(87 seats) and Nagpur(145 seats) municipal corporations.
BMC, the country's richest civic body with a budget of over Rs 20,000 crore, more than that of many states, has 227 seats.In Mumbai, 2,232 candidates were in the fray for 227 electoral wards in the city.





Party Status before 2012 Civic Polls


The Shiv Sena—BJP combine rules Mumbai, besides the neighbouring Thane (total seats 130), Ulhasnagar (78), Nashik (122) and Nagpur (145). 
Congress controls Amravati (87)
Congress—NCP combine rules in Pune (152) and Solapur (102)
NCP alone holds Pimpri—Chinchwad civic body (126)
Akola municipal corporation has 73 seats and was under Congress—NCP rule but was dissolved by state government last year over financial irregularities







Less than 50% Voting in Mumbai Civic Polls


Despite voter awareness campaigns, less than half of the city turned out to vote in the elections to the 227 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), one of the 10 corporations in Maharashtra which went to the polls on Thursday Feb 16,2012.
According to  the State Election Commission, 46 % of the 10,279,377 voters exercised their franchise in Greater Mumbai.
Overall 54 per cent of the electors voted in the Statewide elections, which went off peacefully, barring some stray incidents


Counting of Votes on Maharashtra Civi Polls - Friday Feb 17,2012


Counting for 10 municipal corporation polls held on Thursday Feb 16,2012 and elections to 27 zilla parishads and 309 Panchayat Samitis held on February 7,2012 began this morning Feb 17,2012.
The results would be out by the afternoon of Feb 17,2012
The polls will test the political acumen and charisma of not only Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, but also 
Shiv Sena patriarch Bal Thackeray and his son Uddhav Thackeray.
