All Time Romantic Films

Gone with the Wind ( 1939 ) an American historical epic film adapted from Margaret Mitchell'sPulitzer-winning 1936 Novel of the same name. The film received 10 Academy Awards(8 competitive, 2 honorary), a record that stood for 20 years.( Ben-Hurr surpassed it in 1960 ) In the American Film Institute's Inaugural Top 100 Best American Films of All Time List of 1998, it was ranked 4th, and in 1989 was selected to be preserved by the National Film Registry








Casablanca (1942) The film is about a man torn between the words of one character, love and virtue. Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid play the lead roles in the film






Roman Holiday (1953) a romantic comedy film directed and produced by William Wyler and starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in the lead roles. Hepburn won an Academy Award For Best Actress for her performance in the film














The Apartment(1960)The film was a commercial and critical hit and  nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won 5 including Best Picture 






Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) a romantic comedy film loosely based on the novel of the same name by Trumen Capote starring Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard and  directed by Blake Edwards 
















When Harry Met Sally(1989) film revolves around the question 'Can a man and a woman just be friends?'. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan play the lead roles in the film






Sleepless in Seattle(1993)  a  American romantic comedy film directed and co-written by Nora Ephron. Based on a story by Jeff Arch, it stars Tom Hanks  as Sam Baldwin and Meg Ryan as Annie Reed in the lead roles





Titanic(1997) an American epic romance and disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron which was a fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson and Kate Winslet as Rose DEWitt Bukater in the lead characters.The film achieved critical and commercial success. It equaled records with 14 Academy Award Nominations( tying the record set in 1950 by Joseph L Mankiewicz's ''All About Eve'') and 11 Wins, receiving the prizes for  -

My Best Friend's Wedding(1997) a romantic comedy film directed by P J Hogan with Julia Roberts,Cameron Diaz,Dermot Mulroney,Rupert Everett and Philip Bosco  playing the lead roles.The film received mostly positive reviews from critics. Commercially, it was one of the top 8 highest grossing films worldwide in 1997





City of Angels (1998) a German-American romantic fantasy drama film directed by Brad Solberling. The film stars  Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan in the lead roles. Set in Los Angeles, California, the film is a very loose remake of Wim Wender's  1987 German filmWings of Desire (Der Himmel über Berlin), which was set in Berlin , West Germany









In the Mood for Love(2000) a Hong Kong Film directed by Wong Kar-wai , starring Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung premiered on May 20, 2000, at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival nominated for the Palme d'Or 









Moulin Rouge(2001) starring Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jim Broadbent film revolves around a poet, courtesan and a jealous duke





Serendipity (2001)a romantic comedy film starring John Cussack and Kate Beckinsale and Directed by Peter Chelsom









Talk to Her(2002)a Spanish film which revolves around the difficulty of communication between the sexes, loneliness and intimacy and the persistence of love beyond loss






Love Actually (2003) a  British Romantic Comedy Film Written and Directed by Richard Curtis. The screenplay delves into different aspects of love as shown through ten separate stories involving a wide variety of individuals, many of whom are shown to be interlinked as their tales progress




P.S. I Love You (2007) American drama film directed by Richard LaGravenese,Screenplay by LaGravanese and Steven Rogers is based on the 2004 Novel of the same name by Cecelia Ahern.
