FIFA Ballon d'Or Award


The "Ballon d'Or", translates to "Golden Ball" or "Golden Balloon" is often referred to as the European Footballer of the Year award and is an annual association football award presented to the player who has been voted to have performed the best over the previous calendar year.
The award was conceived by France Football's chief magazine writer Gabriel Hanot  who asked his colleagues to vote for the player of the year in Europe in 1956. The inaugural winner was Stanley Matthews of Blackpool.

4 Players Have Won the "Ballon d'Or" Award Thrice - 

1) Hendrik Johannes Cruijff known as Johan Cruyff is a  former Dutch Football Player(won in 1971, 1973 and 1974)

2) Michel François Platini, is a former French Football Player( won in 1983,1984 and 1985) 

3) Marco van Basten,former Dutch Football Player ( won in 1988,1989 and 1992 ) and


4) Lionel Messi,Argentine Football Player ( won in 2009,2010 and 2011)






 Lionel Messi won the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2011 after polling 47.88 of the votes, ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo (21.6)%) and Xavi (9.23%)


Homare Sawa, winner of the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award, led Japan to the title at the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 in Germany, where she also won the adidas Golden Ball as the best player of the competition and the adidas Golden Boot for her five goals.

Homare Sawa Polled 28.51% of the votes, ahead of Brazil's Marta and Abby Wambach from the USA, who received 17.28% and 13.26% respectively.

Josep Guardiola,the Spanish coach of FC Barcelona won the FIFA World Coach of the Year 2011 for Men’s Football . Josep Guardiola Polled 41.92% of the votes, ahead of Manchester United’s Sir Alex Ferguson's 15.61% of the Votes, and Jose Mourinho, the Portuguese coach of Real Madrid (12.43% of the Votes).


Japan’s Women’s National Team Coach Norio Sasaki won the FIFA World Coach of the Year 2011 for Women’s Football.Norio Sasaki Polled 45.57% of the votes, ahead of Pia Sundhage, the Swedish coach of the USA women’s national team (15.83%), and France’s women’s team coach Bruno Bini (10.28%).


Ballon d'O Awards were decided after a poll in which the captains and head coaches of the men’s (for the two men’s football awards) and women’s (for the two women’s football awards) national teams, as well as international media representatives selected by French football magazine France Football, voted for candidates in each of the four categories. Each group’s votes represented one third of the final result.

Ronaldo became the first Brazil Football Player to win the award in 1997, after non-Europeans were made eligible


With 7 awards each, Dutch and German players have won the Ballon d'Or the most.

Italy's Football Clubs - Juventus and Milan clubs had the most winners respectively; 6 players have won 8 awards in total whilst playing for one of those teams.

In 2010, the Ballon d'Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year Award were merged and the world's best player has since been awarded the FIFA Ballon d'Or  each year.

In 2011, UEFA created the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award, so it could keep the prestige of the old Ballon d'or after it was merged to create the FIFA Ballon d'Or .


  
Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo,the Portugal Football Player won the award in 2008(became the most expensive player in football history after moving from Manchester United To Real Madrid  in a transfer deal worth £80 million -  €94 million)




Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite,commonly known as Kaká,the Brazilian Attacking Midfield Football Player won the award in 2007

 


Fabio Cannavaro,the former Italian defender won the award in 2006(given the name "Muro di Berlino" which means The Berlin wall by Italian supporters)

 


Ronaldo de Assis Moreira,commonly known as Ronaldinho, the Brazillian Forward Football Player won the award in 2004 and 2005


  
Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima,commonly known as Ronaldo,the Brazilian Striker won the award twice in 1997 and 2002 and is the youngest to win the award(in 1997 when he was 21 years)
Ronaldo has played for Brazil in 98 international matches, scoring 62 goals.He was a part of the Brazilian squad that won the 1994 and 2002 World Cup.During the 2006 World Cup,he became the highest goal scorer in World Cup with 15 goals surpassing Ger Muller's(Germany)14 goals.He is also the only player to have won the World Cup - Golden Ball(1998) and Golden Shoe(2002)
