UPA Govt's Cabinet Clears Lokpal Bill Draft - Dec 20,2011

The Union Cabinet met this evening Dec 20,2011 and cleared the Lokpal Bill draft to be tabled in Parliament on Thursday Dec22,2001 in Lok Sabha and on Friday Dec23,2011 in Rajya Sabha.

The draft has  been rejected by anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare because -

  • The Govt. refuses to make the nine-member Lokpal the new boss of the CBI. The Lokpal is an ombudsman agency that will investigate charges of corruption among government servants. Anna and his activists wanted the administrative control of the CBI to be handed to the ombudsman. "If the government controls the CBI, how will investigations be independent?
  • Anna is also opposed to how the CBI's most senior officer will be chosen. The Lokpal draft  proposes that the Director of the CBI will be selected by a three-member panel consisting of the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Justice of India.
