Rajasthan Doctors on Strike, Medical Services Hit




Medical services at government hospitals in Rajasthan have taken a hit after 6,500 in-service doctors have gone on an indefinite strike demanding pay parity with doctors at the Central Government hospitals. 
3,000 Resident Doctors have joined in as well.


Doctors decided to stop work after talks with the Ashok Gehlot government collapsed.
The government invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act and arrested 14 doctors on Tuesday Dec 21,2011.
The government began a crackdown on Thursday Dec 22,2011 and 9 doctors were suspended.
Medical services remained affected in government hospitals in Rajasthan as the strike by doctors entered its third day on Friday Dec 23,2011. In a bid to end the strike, over 200 doctors have been arrested. Efforts were on to break the deadlock .

The govt has suspended two Chief Medical and Health officers (CMHOs) and 10 Primary Medical Officers (PMOs). A total of 397 doctors have been arrested so far under the Essential Services Maintenance Act. 

Around 361 private hospitals across the state have been authorized to give OPD and diagnostic services.  

Army doctors have stepped in to help out and emergency services have been restored in a few hospitals.
The government announced a fresh recruitment drive last week after 5000 doctors quit after nearly 200 of their colleagues, who were on strike, were arrested.

 Rajastan Doctors to Resume Duty
Resident doctors in Rajasthan who were on strike for the past seven days in support of in-service government doctors, will resume duty on Wednesday Dec 28,2011.
Resident Doctors' Association representatives on Tuesday night met State Health Minister Duru Miya at his residence and informed him that they will return to work on Wednesday morning.
"The association has given a letter to the minister assuring to call off their strike unconditionally,"
