PM Arrives Chennai on a two-day TN Visit


PM Manmohan Singh arrived here Sunday evening on a two-day visit during which On Monday Dec 26,2011, Manmohan Singh will participate in the 125th birth anniversary celebrations of mathematician S. Ramanujan organised by the Institute of Mathematical Sciences and

would then leave for Karaikudi in Sivaganga District to participate in a function at Alagappa University and inaugurate the ''100th Eye Hospital of the Vasan Healthcare Group''.

This is PM Manmohan Singh's 1st visit to the TN since J Jayalalithaa returned to power six months ago in May 2011.

 In her 40-minute meeting with PM Manmohan Singh at Raj Bhavan on Sunday Dec 25,2011

 

TN CM J Jayalalithaa submitted a memorandum making a host of demands.In the 18-page memorandum, she has -

  • sought exemption of TN from the proposed ''National Food Security Bill'' and protection of the "traditional fishing rights" of Indian fishermen in the Palk Bay and their safety and security in the backdrop of attacks on them allegedly by Sri Lankan Navy.

  • asked PM Manmohan Singh to advise Kerala not to build a new dam across Mullaperiyar

  • demanded deployment of the Central Industrial Security Force to safeguard the reservoir and withdrawal of the recent order of the National Disaster Management Authority constituting a team of experts for formulating a Contingency Response Plan and 

  • sought a financial package for the state.
