Kyrgyzstan Starts Anti-Bride Kidnapping Campaign

The origins of bride kidnapping are rooted in the former Soviet state's nomadic folklore.Bride kidnapping is a tradition of the Kyrgyz people, but these crimes often force women to commit suicide.Around 15,000 women each year become the victims of bride kidnapping.Bride kidnapping, though, is a crime in Kyrgyzstan although if found guilty offenders receive up to three years in jail rather than the 10 years given to people for other abductions.
Kyrgyzstan’s President, Roza Otunbayeva  called on the Kyrgyz people to stop bride kidnapping.
