2011's Ousted Heads Of State

Following deadly clashes between demonstrators and security forcesPresident Zine El Abidine Ben Ali fled Tunisia  the birthplace of the Arab Spring, on January 14, 2011, after 23 years in power. He was tried in absentia  for theft and sentenced to 35 years in prison

After days of massive demonstrations and a bloody crackdown on protests in Tahrir Square, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned  (in power for nearly 30 years) The 83-year-old Mubarak was charged with corruption and the killing of demonstrators and the trial is going on.

After the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan, Prime Minister Naoto Kan's popularity plunged and he resigned  on August 26, 2011, after 15 years in office, and was succeeded by former finance minister Yoshihiko Noda.

After months of civil war, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was ousted from power when the capital Tripoli fell to rebel forces in August 2011. Gaddafi fled the city but was captured and killed on October 20,2011 near the city of Sirte.




On November 12,2011 following a blow in local elections and a week of market turmoil,Italy's PM Silvio Berulusconi resigned  ending a decades-long political career. Berlusconi's last year in office was filled with scandals, with reports of "bunga bunga" parties and accusations that he paid a 17-year-old girl to have sex.
