ABC Television Network in USA





    American Broadcasting Company (ABC)

                               The ABC television network went on the air on April 19, 1948.

ABC is owned by The Walt Disney Company and is part of Disney-ABC Television Group

ABC is one of the big three television networks in USA -CBS and NBC being the other two.

 On September 23, 1962, ABC began televising the animated television series ''The Jetsons'' in color.

 

In 1976 ABC acquired the broadcasting rights for telecasting the 'Annual Academy Awards Ceremony'. 

By 1977, ABC had become the USA's highest-rated network.In 1984, ABC acquired majority control of 24-hour cable sports channel ESPN. ESPN on ABC (formerly known as ABC Sports) is the brand used for sports programming on the ABC Television Network. 

 

In 1986ABC was acquired by 'Capital Cities' for $3.5 billion dollars, changing its corporate name to Capital Cities/ABC. 

In 1996,The Walt Disney Company acquired Capital Cities/ABC, and renamed the broadcasting group ABC, Inc. 

In 1999, the network was able to experience a brief bolster in ratings with the hit game show''Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'' (quiz show which offers a maximum prize of $1,000,000 for correctly answering 14 consecutive multiple-choice questions of random difficulty) 

 The show is presented by Regis Francis Xavier Philbin,an American  Media Personality,Actor and Singer known for hosting Talkshows and Gameshows since the 1960s during (1999–2002, 2004, 2009) 


 

and Meredith Louise Vieira,an American Journalist,Television Personality and Gameshow Host from 2010

 


For the 2001–2002 television season, ABC began airing newer scripted programming in High Definition; in addition, the network also converted all of its existing situation comedies and drama programming to HD, making it the first such American television network to produce its entire slate of scripted programming in that format.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ABC's Entry Into Reality Television

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (EM:HE in 2003 a reality television series series providing home renovations for less fortunate families and community schools etc hosted by Tygert Bruton "Ty"Pennington(former model, carpenter and veteran television personality)

 

Dancing with the Stars in 2005 is the American version of the British BBC Television Series 'Strictly Come Dancing' hosted by Tom Bergeron

 




 The One: Making a Music Star in 2006  hosted by George Stroumboulopoulos 



 The One received unanimously negative reviews, pulled some of the lowest ratings in TV history, and was canceled after only two weeks


ABC Daytime

Good Morning America (GMA) is an American Morning News and Talkshow  broadcast from November 3, 1975.The program features news, talk, weather and special-interest stories.The program is hosted by Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos


 The View is an American Talkshow  since its debut in 1997



The Chew is an American Talkshow/Cookingshow centering on food -related and lifestyle topics.


One Life to Live (OLTL) is an American Soap Opera which debuted on July 15, 1968 and primarily feature racially and socioeconomically diverse characters and consistently emphasize social issues.


 General Hospital is an American daytime television drama that is credited by the Guinness Book Of World Records as the longest-running American Soap Opera currently in production and the 3rd longest running drama in television  in American history after Guiding Light and As the World Turns.It is the world's 2nd longest running scripted TV Drama Series currently in production after British Series Coronation Street. (General Hospital premiered on  April 1, 1963)

 



 ABC's Children's Programmes

Schoolhouse Rock! is series of animated musical educational short films that aired during the Saturday morning.The series' original run lasted from 1973 to 1985, and was later revived with both old and new episodes airing from 1993 to 1999.



ABC's Entry Into News Channel

In 2004, ABC launched a news channel called 'ABC News Now' to provide round-the-clock news on over-the-air digital TV, cable TV, the Internet, and mobile phones.

 
 ABC's Drama Series

Desperate Housewives 
Since its premiere  on October 3, 2004, the show has been well received by viewers and critics alike. The show is a multiple Emmy;Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award Winner




 Desperate Housewives was officially renewed by ABC on May 17, 2011 for an 8th season.

 Lost
is aired  from September 22, 2004 to May 23, 2010, consisting of 6 seasons  that follows the survivors of the crash of a commercial passenger jet  flying between Sydney and Los Angeles on a mysterious tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean.
