Mohanlal - the complete actor.


Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair (DOB May 21, 1960) is regarded as one of the finest actors in Indian Cinema.



Mohanlal made his acting debut in the unreleased movie Thiranottam(1978), which was followed by a role as the lead antagonist in his first release Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980)

Mohanlal's first break into films didn't prove as lucky. He was offered a comic role in Thiranottam produced by his friends from the Bharath CineGroup but the film opened in a single theatre


Mohanlal's 2nd film Manjil Virinja Pookkal became his first big release. Mohanlal portrayed the role of the antagonist in this blockbuster

He was labelled a superstar of Malayalam cinema in 1986 after the success of  ''Rajavinte Makan'' in which he played an underworld don.
 

 In 1989, his role of Sethu Madhavan, who dreams of becoming a police officer but ends up as a criminal, in the tragedy  Kireedam, earned him a  Special Jury Award.  


''His Highness Abdullah''(1990) was the  first movie produced by Mohanlal


 His role in ''Bharatham'' as a Carnatic Singer who is burdened by a jealous brother, earned him the National Award for Best Actor in 1991


Among Mohanlal's most successful films of this decade is Devasuram(1993), written by Ranjith and directed by I V Sasi.

In 1994, Mohanlal starred along with Shobhana and Suresgopi in Fazil's Manichitrathazhu in the lead role as a psychiatrist. The film was a critical and commercial success, and became the highest grossing Malayalam film at that time[
Mohanlal's first non-Malayalam movie was the Tamil film Iruvar(1997), directed by Mani Ratnam.


Mohanlal's first Bollywood movie was Ram Gopal Varma's Company in 2002. He won the IIFA Star Screen Award for Best Supporting Actor.
 Mohanlal played the role of D. Sivanandan, a Mumbai  police officer, in the movie


Mohanlal's film Guru was India's official entry in the Best Foreign Film category at the Oscars in 1997.In the film,he he plays the role as Raghuraman,who wanted to kill all the people because he lost his relatives,love and parents during a bobmbblast. But he got deviate during a dream which took him to a world without eyes,there he found the reason behind it and gave the solutions too.

Vanaprastham is the story of Kunhikuttan (Mohanlal)belonging to a lower class and a Kathakali dancer who is admired and respected for his performance. While performing as Arjuna  one day he comes across Subhadra (Suhasini), the daughter-in-law of the Travancore diwan. She is a well-educated lady and belongs to an upper caste family. They fall in love but Subhadra is rather in love with the mythological character Arjuna than Kunhikuttan. Although they break the established norms of the society and have a son, soon Subhadra gets over him and denies access to his own. As Kunhikuttan returns back to stage he is offered to play demonic characters instead of the heroes. While paying these dark characters similar darkness envelops him and he grows embittered and resentful. The film ends with a superb Kathakali performance by Kunhikuttan.

Paradesi(2007)directed by P. T. Kunjumuhammed




Paradesi tells the story of Valiyakaththu Moosa, an Indian Muslim who moves from the Malabar region of Kerala, India to Karachi, Pakistan during the British Raj in search of a job. Post-partition, he returns from Pakistan and settles down in Malappuram, Kerala. This man, who lives as a true Indian, doesn't get his Indian passport and thus an Indian identity in the official sense, even after 50 years of Independence. The police harass him and his neighbours in a similar situation as Pakistani spies. The film has Mohanlal playing the character in three stages of his life, between the ages of 35 and 80
 Padma Shri in 2001 - 4th highest Civilian Award
