Suriya (DOB July 23, 1975 as Saravanan Sivakumar) made his Tamil Film Debut in 'Nerrukku Ner'(1997)Directed by Vasanth and Produced by Director Maniratnam.
Surya's first breakthrough came in ' Nandha'(2002)directed by Bala
and followed by Director Amir's 'Mounam Pesiyadhe'(2002)
Director Gautam Menon's 'Kaakha Kaakha'(2003) a film about the life of a police officer Anbu Selvan (Suriya)which made him a performing actor as well as commerically successful hero
Director Bala's 'Pithamagan'(2003) gave him appreciation from all (for the performance as a talkative live Sakthi(Suriya) contrary to his personal nature).'Pithamagan' won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2003.
Perazhagan(2004) directed by Sasi Shanker starring Suriya and Jyotika in lead roles with both playing dual roles received acclaim for his performance as a 'hunchback'.This is the 1st film where Suriya plays a dual role.the film won him the Best Actor - Filmfare Award in 2004
Aayutha Ezhuthu(2004) a political film directed by Mani Ratnam stars Suriya,Madhavan and Siddharth in the lead roles.The title of the movie is the name of a Tamil Alphabet letter, ஃ, represented by three dots as the film deals with three different personalities from completely different strata of society. The film calls for the involvement of the youth in the nation's highest decision making processes. The movie was simultaneously made in Hindi as Yuva.

The film is a two-part Indian biographical based on the life of 'Paritala Ravindra'.The film features Vivek Oberoi as Ravindra in the lead role, whilst Suriya plays as Suri, who predominantly appears in the second part.The film was released in three different languages - Telegu;Hindi and Tamil.The Telugu and Hindi versions were released in two parts, six weeks apart, while the Tamil version was released as a single film
