Aruna Shanbaug - Should Euthanesia Plea be allowed or not

Aruna Shanbhag is a Nurse from Haldipur, Uttar Kannada, Karnataka in India. In 1973,On the night of 27 November 1973 while working at King Edward Memorial Hospital, Parel, Mumbai, she was sexually assaulted by Sohanlal Bhartha Walmiki, a ward boy at the hospital,He choked her with a dog chain which cut off oxygen supply to her brain resulting in brain stem contusion injury and cervical cord injury apart from leaving her cortically blind


Shanbaug remains admitted at Mumbai's KEM Hospital and since the assault, she has been in a vegetative state
A "mercy killing" (Euthanesia Plea) petition filed by Aruna's friend journalist Pinki Virani on Shanbaug's behalf contended that she cannot see or speak properly and keeping her alive violates her right to live with dignity
The CG on Wednesday 02.03.1 argued against the petition in the SC that seeks mercy killing for Aruna Shanbaug stating the distinction between the right to chose to terminate one's life and the right to terminate one's life at the instance of others
The SC on Wednesday 02.03.11 reserved its verdict in the Aruna Shanbaug mercy killing case.
Supreme Court today 07.03.2011 dismissed a plea for mercy killing.

Statement made by the Mumbai's KEM Hospital Dean Sanjay Oak  -

: "Aruna (Ramchandra Shanbaug) is the bond that unites us" and "she means a lot to KEM Hospital" whose staff are "determined to take care of her till her last breath by natural process."
