2019 Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha Election Results Thursday May 23,2019

In the politically critical state of Uttar Pradesh, BJP won 62 seats while its ally Apna Dal won 2 seats taking NDA's tally to 64.

Despite the alliance, Samajwadi Party won 5 seats while Bahujan Samaj Party won 10

SP has got 17.96 % while the BSP has got 19.26 % vote share

BJP's most remarkable victory came in Amethi where Union Minister Smriti Irani defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi

Rahul, who was elected three times consecutively from the constituency in 2004, 2009 and 2014, lost this time by over 55,000 votes.

The only other time that a Gandhi family member has lost from this constituency, created in 1967, was in 1977 and it was Rahul`s uncle late Sanjay Gandhi who was defeated in an anti-Emergency wave.

Sanjay Gandhi then wrested the seat from Janata Party in 1980 and since then it has remained with the Congress, barring one year when the BJP won the seat.  After Sanjay Gandhi`s death in 1981,

Rajiv Gandhi won the seat in a by-election the same year. Rajiv Gandhi then retained the seat in 1984 and 1989.

Although the BJP had won 71 seats in the last elections, the performance is much better than what many exit polls had forecast

BJP got 49.56 % vote share - at least 4 crore people voted for the saffron party in BJP, the Election Commission said.

In 2014 BJP won 71 seats and got 42.30% vote share
