On Jan 03,1977,India Register Maiden Test Win in Australia after Chandrashekhar's Heroics

In what was one of the most special moments in the history of Indian cricket, India registered their first-ever win Down Under when they beat the hosts by 222 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Despite missing the Chappell brothers, Dennis Lillee and others due to the Kerry Packer saga, Australia were still too good for India. The visitors came into the third Test trailing the series 2-0 and were in desperate need of something spectacular and it came in the form of Sunil Gavaskar and Bhagwath Chandrashekhar.

India opted to bat and made 256 thanks to fifties from Mohinder Amarnath (59) and Gundappa Vishwanath (56). Chandrashekhar then ran through the Australians who were bowled out for 213. He ended the innings with figures of 6 for 52.

India then posted a target of 387 for the home side with Gavaskar scoring 118. Gavaskar had scored two centuries in the preceding two Tests which helped him counter the Australians. Chandrashekar repeated his heroics, taking 6 for 52 again to bring down Australia. The hosts were bowled out for 164, thereby handing India their maiden Test win in Australia.
