2018 US midterm elections Tuesday Nov 06,2018

US voters go to the polls on Tuesday, November 6, to take part in elections that will help define the remaining two years of President Donald Trump's first term in office.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs in the midterms, as well as 35 seats in the Senate, and 39 governorships.

US President Donald Trump's Republican party currently has a majority in the Senate and House of Representatives, but failure to hold on to either could result in political deadlock for the US leader's most ambitious policies

Held every four years, midterm elections occur halfway through every presidential term. Midterms generally garner low voter participation

Every two years, all 435 House seats are up for election. But in the Senate, where elected officials serve staggered six-year terms, one-third of the seats are decided during midterms.

In the House, 218 seats are necessary for a majority, while 51 seats constitute a majority in the Senate.
