AIADMK Leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa Laid To Rest As Thousands Pay Homage Tuesday Dec 06,2016

The final journey of the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa started from Rajaji Bhavan and ended at the Marina Beach where the iconic leader was buried next to her mentor, MG Ramachandran.

J Jayalalithaa was laid to rest with state honours at 6.10 pm next to the memorial of her mentor and AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran on the Marina Beach.

Her body was placed on a flower-decked open carriage and taken to the burial site amid huge security followed by thousands of her supporters.

After the national flag draped around her body was removed, she was placed in a sandalwood casket and solemnly lowered into the ground.

As many as nine Chief Ministers representing diverse parties — Devendra Fadnavis, Akhilesh Yadav, Naveen Patnaik, Pinarayi Vijayan, N. Chandrababu Naidu, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Siddaramaiah, V. Narayanasamy and Arvind Kejriwal — paid their respects, as did many senior political leaders from around the country.

“She was not a leader of Tamil Nadu. She was a national leader,” Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi said.

Thousands of people, many of them AIADMK partypersons, lined the road and chanted ‘Puratchi Thalaivi Vazhgha’ (Long live our revolutionary leader) as the flower-bedecked cortege, which moved at 4. 15 p.m., passed.

The distance of less than 2 km to the beach took around an hour to cover.
