England won the toss and chose to bat first

Test Debut - Karun Nair(India)

England announced two of their changes yesterday - Jos Buttler replacing Ben Duckett and Chris Woakes coming in for the injured Stuart Broad - and the third was confirmed shortly before the toss when Gareth Batty, the Surrey offspinner, was included in place of Zafar Ansari.

Parthiv Patel recalled, for his first Test in eight years, in place of Wriddhiman Saha, and his comeback took another twist on the morning of the game when he was slated to open the batting.

KL Rahul exacerbated an injury in the nets yesterday and, with India not having a spare opener in the squad, they opted to give a debut to 24-year-old Karun Nair at No. 6.

Squads

India
1 M Vijay, 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 Karun Nair, 7 R Ashwin, 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Jayant Yadav, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Mohammed Shami

England
1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Haseeb Hameed, 3 Joe Root, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Gareth Batty, 11 James Anderson

  • Moeen Ali needs five wickets to reach 100 in Tests
  • Virat Kohli needs 109 runs for 4000 in Tests; Alastair Cook needs 105 for 11,000
  • India have not lost in Mohali since 1994, against West Indies, in the ground's first Test. Since then they have 6 wins and 5 draws

At lunch England were 92/4 in 29 Overs Jonny Bairstow 20* and Ben Stokes 05*at the crease
Fall of Wickets(England)
Haseeb Hameed  09(31 Balls 4x1)
Joe Root            15(13 Balls 4x3)
Alastair Cook      27(42 Balls 4x6)
Moeen Ali           16(45 Balls 4x1 and 6x1)

At close of play,England were 268/8 with  Adil Rasheed 04* and Gareth Batty 00* at the crease

England's 268/8 was a huge missed opportunity especially as India dropped four catches.Alastair Cook was given two reprieves and Bairstow benefited from the other two drops.

India bowled with a lot of perseverance to restrict England to 268/8 despite a defiant 89 from Jonny Bairstow

Umesh Yadav (2/58 in 16 overs),Ravichandran Ashwin (1/43 in 18 overs), Mohammed Shami (1/52) Jayant Yadav (2/49 in 15 Overs)and Ravindra Jadeja (2/56 in 21 overs)

Jonny Bairstow  forged couple of important partnerships -- 57 for the fifth wicket with Ben Stokes and 69 for the sixth wicket with comeback-man Jos Buttler (43).

Chris Woakes also provided some support to Jonny Bairstow and the duo added 45 runs for the seventh wicket.

Jonny Bairstow, who has been England's top run-getter in Test cricket in the past one year, mixed caution with occasional aggression en route his 13th half-century in Test cricket.

10 - Number of fifty-plus scores by Jonny Bairstow batting at No. 5 or lower this year. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, in 2002, and Angelo Mathews, in 2014, are the only other batsmen to get as many fifty-plus scores from that low in the order in any calendar year.
