Day Three Monday Oct 10,2016

A splendid 6-wicket effort from premier strike bowler Ravichandran Ashwin 6/81 saw India maintain their stranglehold on New Zealand as India bowled out New Zealand for 299 and remain firmly on course for a 3-0 series whitewash at the end of third day’s play in the final Test match

Virat Kohli, however, did not enforce the follow-on and India were 18 for no loss at stumps increasing their overall lead to 276 runs.

The day belonged to Ravichandran Ashwin, who used the bowlers’ rough brilliantly by operating from the pavilion end to get his 20th five-wicket haul in his 39th Test

.
The off-spinner, who grabbed 10 wickets in the series opener at Kanpur and four in the second match at Kolkata, also ran out two batsmen off his own bowling.

Ravichandran Ashwin sent back Latham, to break the opening partnership before lunch, and then dismissed captain and No 3 Kane Williamson (8) before adding the scalps of Ross Taylor (0) and Luke Ronchi (0) to trigger a top-order collapse from which New Zealand could not recover.
He then trapped the stubborn James Neesham on the sweep shot in front of the stumps for 71 and then brought the innings to an end by having last man Trent Boult caught in the deep.

R. Ashwin is galloping towards legendary status for India

1. Ravichandran Ashwin has become the fourth Indian bowler to bag 20 or more instances of five-wicket hauls in Tests, joining Anil Kumble (35), Harbhajan Singh (25) and Kapil Dev (23).
2. Ashwin has taken his wickets' tally to 213 at an average of 24.81 -- the highest by a bowler after 39 Tests, surpassing Waqar Younis' tally of 208 (ave.20.56).
3. Ashwin's tally of 20 five-wicket hauls in Tests include five vs New Zealand, four each vs West Indies, South Africa and Australia, two vs Sri Lanka and one vs Bangladesh.
4. Ashwin has become the first Indian bowler to produce five five-wicket hauls vs New Zealand in only five Tests. Only four bowlers have registered six instances of five-wicket hauls vs New Zealand -- Derek Underwood, Ian Botham, Wasim Akram and Dale Steyn.
5. Earlier, Ashwin also became the fastest Indian bowler to pick up 200 wickets in Tests, breaking the record of Harbhajan Singh who had taken 37 matches more.

His spin partner Ravindra Jadeja accounted for the other two wickets in the visitors’ innings.

With two days left in the game, India, who won the first two Tests by huge margins, looked well-poised to score another victory for a clean sweep of the series.

Virat Kohli became only the second India captain after Mahendra Singh Dhoni and 10th overall to receive the mace, even though it is for the third time since Kohli took over as captain that India have led the rankings table.

India had topped the rankings very briefly in January-February this year as well as in August. India's longest stint at the number-one position was from November 2009 to August 2011 under Dhoni.
The other captains to have received the mace are Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Steve Smith (all Australia), Andrew Strauss (England), Graeme Smith, Hashim Amla (both South Africa) and Misbah-ul-Haq (Pakistan).

Virat Kohli-led Team India beat New Zealand by 321 runs in the third and final Test at Indore to complete a 3-0 clean sweep. This is the first time that India has completed a clean sweep under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.

This is only the fourth time in history that India has completed a clean sweep in a series consisting of 3 or more matches. The other instances were against England in 1992-93, against Sri Lanka in 1993-94 and against the Australians in 2012-13. All these clean sweeps have been achieved while playing at home.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked up 13 wickets in the match, was adjudged the 'Man of the Match'. The offie finished the series with 27 wickets and was declared the 'Man of the series' for his efforts. This is the seventh time that Ashwin was declared the 'Man of the series'.
