There was to be no upset win for Roberta Vinci this year on Arthur Ashe Stadium as Angelique Kerber booked her place in the semi-finals of the US Open.
On
the same court on which Vinci had memorably ended Serena Williams’
Calendar Grand Slam bid 12 months ago, the 33-year-old Italian served
for the first set but could not see it out and German second seed Kerber
ran out a 7-5, 6-0 winner in one hour and 18 minutes.
Kerber
said: ‘I think it is always difficult to play against Roberta. She is a
great player and played so well last year here. She came out to play
good tennis.
