Krishna Janmashtmi Celebrations Thursday Aug 25,2016

Krishna Janmashtmi celebrates the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, the eight avtaar of Lord Vishnu.

The festival is celebrated on the eight day of the Krishna Paksha of the month Shravan (August - September) in Hindu calendar.

Devotees celebrate this festival by fasting and staying up until midnight, when Krishna is believed to have been born.

While Dahi Handi celebrates the joyful and mischiveous nature of Krishna, Raas Lila comemmorates the flirtatious dimension of his character from his youthful days.

Places with Krishna Connect

Mathura:
This is the place where the Lord was born. Krishna’s parents- Devki and Vasudev were held captive by his uncle- Kansa, the king of Mathura, who feared he would get killed at the hands of his sister’s son. Baby Krishna was born in a prison where his parents were forcibly held.
Gokul:
Vasudev, by the grace of the almighty, is blessed with the power to break all the shackles and safely escort Krishna to Nanda’s abode in Vridavan. Incidentally, Nanda’s wife Yashoda too delivers a baby girl. Vasudev swaps the babies.
Vrindavan:
Nanda headed the group of people whose occupation was cow herding. This is where Krishna spent his childhood, herding cows, playing with his friends and his admirers. The famous Govardhana parvat, which Krishna lifted with his little finger, is located near the town of Vrindavan. We can see the remains of the mountain today.
Dwarka:
Krishna moved to Dwaraka along with his Yadava subjects to establish a kingdom of his own after killing his uncle Kansa.
Kuruskshetra:
As Parthasarathy or Arjuna’s charioteer, Krishna gave mankind the greatest gift – the Bhagavad Gita. While Arjun sought answers to infinite dilemma in the battlefield, Krishna resolved them through a dialogue. Kuruskshetra witnessed the divine historic moment.
Veraval/ Somnath:
The Bhalka Tirtha located in Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval near the holy town of Somnath is where Krishna transcended to the heavenly abode after being hit on his left foot by a hunter’s arrow.
