India remembers martyrs on the occassion of 17th Kargil Vijay Diwas Tuesday July 26,2016

Prime Minister Narendra Modi remembered the 'heroic sacrifices' of the 'valiant soldiers' on the occasion of 17th Kargil Vijay Diwas on Tuesday July 26,2016

Kargil Vijay Diwas marks India's victory in the 1999 war with Pakistan that began on 3 May and ended on 26 July


The Kargil War was an armed conflict that took place between India and Pakistan in May-June 1999. It started with Pakistani soldiers infiltrating into the Indian side of the Line of Control (LOC). The Indian Army, supported by the Indian Air Force forced the Pakistani forces to withdraw and won back all the high outposts. India lost 527 soldiers in the conflict and Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated on July 26 every year in honour of the Kargil War's Heroes
