Irani Cup (earlier called Irani Trophy)

The Irani Cup (earlier called Irani Trophy) tournament was conceived during the 1959-60 season to mark the completion of 25 years of the Ranji Trophy championship and was named after the late Z.R. Irani, who was associated with the BCCI from its inception in 1928, till his death in 1970

  • The Irani Cup Tournament is played between the previous year's Ranji Trophy Winners and the Rest of India Team.

  • The first match, played between the Ranji Trophy  Champions and the Rest of India was played in 1959-60

  • Since 1965-66, Irani Cup traditionally heralded the start of the new domestic season

Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai play Rest of India in the Irani Cup at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday Feb 6,2013

Mumbai's skipper Abhishek Nayar won the toss and opted field first in their Irani Trophy match against the Rest of India (ROI).AbhishekNayar was captaining Mumbai for the first time in the absence of regular skipper Ajit Agarkar, who is injured

Virender Sehwag was named the captain of the ROI but he decided to opt out due to stomach bug
