Cayman Islands - Premier Is Named to Replace Ousted Predecessor

The Governor of the Caymans Islands,Duncan Taylor on Wednesday Dec 19,2012 appointed Juliana O’Connor-Connolly as the new premier of the British territory.


Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, a Former Teacher and Lawyer, became the First FemaleMinister of the Caymans in 1997, heading the Ministry of Community Affairs, Sports, Women, Youth and Culture.


The former Premier, W. McKeeva Bush, was ousted on Tuesday Dec 18,2012 by the Legislative Assembly, a wek after his arrest  in a corruption investigation.

A Governoris appointed by The Queen of the UK on the advice of the British Govt. to represent the monarch .Governors can exercise complete legislative and executive authority.A 15-seat Legislative Assembly is elected by the people every four years to handle domestic affairs. Of the elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), five are chosen to serve as government ministers in a Cabinet headed by the Governor. The Premier is appointed by the Governor.

There is an office of the Deputy Governor, who must be a Caymanian and have served in a senior public office.The Cabinet is composed of two official members and five elected members, called ministers; one of whom is designated Premier.
