2011 Census Population and Household Estimates for England and Wales


Population
The population of England and Wales on census day (27 March 2011) was 56.1 million.This was an increase of 3.7 million (7 per cent) since 2001 when there were 52.4 million people.
Around 55 per cent of the increase in population between 2001 and 2011 was the result of net migration

One in six people in England and Wales in 2011 was aged 65 and over. Of these, 430,000 were aged 90 and over.
There were 23.4 million households in England and Wales, an 8 per cent increase on the 21.7 million households in 2001.


Religion
The number of people calling themselves Christian in the UK fell dramatically between 2001 and 2011.Christianity was the only religion to see a drop-off in membership, with a 12% decreasebetween 2001 and 2011.
The number of people with no religion at all  in the UK has doubled since 2001.14 million people now consider themselves without a religion – up from 7.7m in 2001
Islam showed the biggest growth in the country with 1.2 million – 5% of the population – calling themselves Muslims in 2011
Ethnicity
India had replaced the Republic of Ireland as the biggest migrant community, with Pakistan retaining third position
96% of Welsh people are white, compared with just 59% of Londoners
Marriage
 For the first time ever, the majority of Britons were unmarried in 2011. The percentage of married couples fell from 51 to 47% between 2001 and 2011.
