UEFA Europa League


The UEFA Europa League previously called the UEFA Cup is the second most prestigious European club football contest after the UEFA Champions League
UEFA Europa League is an annual association football cup competition organised by UEFA since 1971 for eligible European football clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions.
Previously called the UEFA Cup, the competition has been known as the UEFA Europa League since the 2009-10 season following a change in the format.

The title has been won by 26 different clubs, 11 of which have won the title more than once.

The most successful clubs in the competition are -
Juventus in 1977,1990 and 1993
Internazionale in 1991,1994 and 1998 and
 Liverpool in 1973,1976 and 2001
 with 3 titles apiece

Sponsorship

 

The UEFA Europa League is sponsored by a single multinational company; the current tournament sponsor is SEAT(Spanish automobile Manufaturer currently a wholly owned subsidiary of the German Volkswagen Group)

 

Adidas AG(a German sports apparel manufacturer and Parent Company of Adidas Group) is a secondary sponsor and supplies the official match ball, as they do for all other UEFA competitions. 

 

Konami's (a Japanese leading developer and publisher of numerous popular video games)Pro Evolution Soccer is also a secondary sponsor as the official Europa League video game




The Europa League Trophy

The trophy was designed and crafted by Bertoni  for the 1972 UEFA Cup Final . It weighs 15 kg and is silver on a yellow marble plinth.

Prize Money

A group stage participation in the Europa League nets €640,000, with a €60,000 bonus per group match played. A victory in the group pays €140,000 and a draw €70,000. Reaching the knock-out matches triggers additional bonuses: €200,000 for the round of 32, €300,000 for the round of 16, €400,000 for the quarterfinals and €700,000 for the semifinals. The losing finalists receive €2 million and the champions get €3 million.

The knockout phase of the began on Feb 14, 2012 with the round of 32 involving 32 teams -

the 24 teams that finished in the top two in each group in the Group Stage and the 8 teams that finished in third place in the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. The 8 Teams that qualified for the Quarter Finals were -

The Finals between Atletico Madrid Vs Athletico Bilbao was played on May 09,2012 at National Arena in Bucharest,Romania

Atletico Madrid claimed the 2011-12 Europa League title after defeating Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the all-Spanish final at the National Arena in Bucharest.

 

Radamel Falcao(Colombia)  scored twice in 7th and 34th of the first half and

 

 Diego scored the 3rd goal in the 85th minute of the second half
