Fifteen years after making his ODI debut, Dinesh Karthik finally made his World Cup debut in the game against Bangladesh at Edgbaston on Tuesday July 2

Dinesh Karthik, who made his ODI debut at Lord's against England in 2004, was part of the squad in the 2007 World Cup but did not feature in any of India's three matches when they made a group-stage exit. He wasn't picked for the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

Dinesh Karthik did not feature in the XI in India's first seven matches this World Cup, before finally getting a chance at the expense of Kedar Jadhav.

Dinesh Karthik has been a part of India's Champions Trophy squads of 2004, 2009, 2013 and 2013, featuring in the XI seven times.

Goods and Services Tax(GST) - GST Collections At Rs. 99,939 Crore In June 2019

In signs of sluggish momentum in tax collections, Goods and Services Tax (GST) receipts in June fell to Rs. 99,939 crore, down from over Rs. 1 lakh crore in the previous month, the finance ministry said on Monday July 01,2019

While the GST collections in June 2019 were lower than Rs. 1,00,289 crore in May 2019, they were higher than Rs. 95,610 crore receipts in the same month of the previous year.

The total number of GSTR-3B returns filed up to June 30, 2019, is 74.38 lakh, as against 72.45 lakh filed in May 2019

"Total gross GST revenue collected in the month of June, 2019 is Rs. 99,939 crore of which CGST is Rs. 18,366 crore, SGST is Rs. 25,343 crore, IGST is Rs. 47,772 crore and cess is Rs. 8,457 crore," the statement said

While the June GST collections at Rs. 99,939 crore snapped the three months of Rs. 1 lakh crore mop-up trend, it was 4.52 per cent higher than the collections in June 2018

For 2019-20, the government proposes to collect Rs. 6.10 lakh crore from CGST and Rs. 1.01 lakh crore as compensation cess. The IGST balance has been pegged at Rs. 50,000 crore.

The CGST collection in 2018-19 was Rs. 4.25 lakh crore, while compensation cess was over Rs. 97,000 crore.

During June 2019, the government has settled Rs. 18,169 crore towards CGST and Rs. 13,613 crore to SGST from IGST as regular settlement.

The total revenue earned by the central government and state governments after regular settlement in June, 2019 is Rs. 36,535 crore for CGST and Rs. 38,956 crore for the SGST.

The collections comprise of receipts by both the Centre and state governments of GST, which had two years back amalgamated 17 different indirect tax levies.

England's win on Sunday June 30,2019 has pushed them to 10 points. What does that mean for the semi-final race?
England's win against India means that Sri Lanka are out. Even if they win their two remaining matches and England lose to New Zealand, Sri Lanka will finish on the same number of points as England, but with one lesser win (because of two rained out matches), which is the first tie-breaker for teams level on points.
With Australia already through, five teams are battling for the three remaining spots: India, New Zealand, England, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Among them, India and New Zealand are all but through because of their superior net run rate - explained in more detail below - while England, Pakistan and Bangladesh are fighting for one slot.
Can England still qualify if they lose to New Zealand on Wednesday?
Yes, they can. For that, India will have to beat Bangladesh, who in turn will have to beat Pakistan. Such a scenario would have both Bangladesh and Pakistan on nine points, with England qualifying as the fourth team with 10 points.
The weather is set fair at Chester le Street for Wednesday's clash between England and New Zealand, but even if there is a no-result, England will still make it because of their superior net run rate, compared to Bangladesh and Pakistan.
What about Bangladesh and Pakistan? How has England's win affected their chances?
The situation has become tougher for both teams as they now need 11 points to qualify, but as things stand, only one of them can get there because they play each other, on Friday.
For Pakistan to qualify, they have to beat Bangladesh and hope New Zealand beat England. Similarly, Bangladesh need to win their last two games and then hope New Zealand beat England. Neither side can afford a loss, however.
Are Bangladesh/ Pakistan out for sure if England beat New Zealand? What about the net-run-rate scenarios among the teams on 11 points?
If India lose their two remaining games and if New Zealand lose to England, then three teams - India, New Zealand and Pakistan/Bangladesh - will finish on 11, vying for two spots.
If Pakistan beat Bangladesh and are the third team on 11 points, then New Zealand and India will qualify, as Pakistan's NRR of -0.792 is far too much of a handicap.
For them to nudge ahead of India, India will have to lose each of their matches by around 150 runs (or the sum of their losses will have to be around 300), and Pakistan will have to beat Bangladesh by around 200 runs.
For Pakistan to go past New Zealand, the result of the two relevant matches - Pakistan beating Bangladesh and England beating New Zealand - will have to be in the region of around 220 runs each.
For Bangladesh, the NRR situation isn't quite as dire, but it is still rather improbable. If, for example, the results of the three matches - Bangladesh's wins versus India and Pakistan, and India's defeat against Sri Lanka - are in the region of around 75 runs each, then Bangladesh will go ahead of India on NRR.
To move past New Zealand, Bangladesh will need the results of the three relevant games - wins in their last two games, and New Zealand's loss to England - to be in the region of around 80 runs.
So is it fair to assume that India and New Zealand are both practically through to the last four?
Yes, given the improbable NRR scenarios, India and New Zealand are both pretty much through. The priority for them would be in terms of securing the best possible positions among the top four: India can still finish on top if they win their last two and Australia lose to South Africa, but the top spot is beyond reach for New Zealand.
The more immediate battle, though, is among England, Pakistan and Bangladesh for the fourth spot.

Chasing the target, Nicholas Pooran118 (103 balls 4x11 and 6x4) too scored his maiden ODI ton besides resurrected the innings with three successive half-century stands in company of Jason Holder, Carlos Brathwaite and Fabien Allen. While he played the primary role in the first two, Allen took over the mantle of the aggressor in the third. Pooran, too, had started off slowly and timed his acceleration well as the innings progressed. It was the Allen-Pooran stand that shifted the momentum in favour of West Indies. To end that partnership and enter the tail early, Karunaratne even used up all his best resources and was left founding when the last three overs started. However, the duo added 83 runs in only 58 balls, with Allen stroking a quickfire half-century. It was his dismissal, which gave West Indies the first of their two jolts in the death overs. Having played a delivery off his pads to the fielder at short fine leg, he wasn't interested in Pooran's call for a quick single. Pooran, batting on 99, was too late to realise his partner's disinterest and continued his run towards the striker's end and forced Allen to go for the risk. The Japanese, who had nervelessly battered her way to Grand Slam success at the U.S. and Australian Opens, failed to find her range on the slick lawns of the All England Club, tumbling out amid a flurry of unforced errors.

Putintseva was far from an unknown quantity for Osaka, having recently knocked her out in Birmingham, and again proved a resolute obstacle for the Japanese, fighting back after an early break to take the first set on a tiebreak.

She broke the Japanese second seed twice in a dominant second set, wrapping up victory in an hour and 36 minutes when her opponent sliced a backhand into the net, becoming the first top-two seed to lose in the women`s first round since Martina Hingis in 2001.

Despite Osaka`s lofty ranking following her rapid rise to the sport`s summit, this was always going to be a potential banana skin for the Japanese, whose form since winning her second major in January has been patchy.

She had made only one semi-final since winning the Australian Open, had suffered a third-round exit at Roland Garros and had entered Wimbledon on the back of a second-round defeat by Putintseva in Birmingham.

Chris Gayle made his ODI debut for West Indies in 1999 and has featured for them fairly regularly since then, notching up 296 ODIs and scoring 25 centuries in the process

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was stunned by the 15-year-old Cori Gauff, known as Coco, in the first round at Court 1 of the All England Club on Monday July 01,2019

Gauff, who at 15 years and 122 days became the youngest player to qualify for the main Wimbledon draw since the Open era began in 1968

It was a match-up between the oldest and the youngest in the draw and the younger one came out on top. Gauff beat Venus 6-4, 6-4 in quickfire fashion as the spectators took notice of the youngster's talent

Gauff became the youngest player since 1991 to register a win in the first round of women's singles at Wimbledon.

Gauff had said ahead of the match that she had picked up the racquet because of the William sisters and Venus was her idol. Playing against her idol for the first time, Gauff did not looked fazed at all.

Her face straight and body language positive, Gauff came out all guns blazing right from the start. She had said ahead of the match that she had nothing to lose and she was only excited for the match-up and the youngster showed it on the court.

For the 39-year-old Venus, it was like playing her own reflection. Serena Williams had said in the pre-tournament press conference that she sees a lot of similarity in the game style of Gauff and Venus and on Monday, it was for all to see.

Gauff matched Venus' ground stroke to ground stroke and they almost matched each other's powers too. The only place where Venus clearly held an edge was at the net but Gauff stifled Venus to the point that the former champion did not get too many opportunities to come forward.

For Gauff, she used the body serve to great effect against Venus, powering through her service games and not giving her idol much to work with. Both the first and second sets, it was Venus who blinked first and gave the advantage to Gauff.

In the first set, the 15-year-old showed immense composure to close out the set and get herself a big lead in the match.

In the second set however, leading 4-3, Gauff showed that she was after all only 15. Facing a couple of break points, Gauff saved one but double-faulted on the next to let Venus back in the match.

However, Gauff was not going to give up. She broke Venus once again in the very next service game after saving a couple of game points. Her power shots and high balls completely put Venus off her game.

Serving for the set, Gauff lost the first point and Venus in fact took the game to deuce but Gauff played beyond her maturity to take the match in her fourth match point.

As Williams hit the final ball into the net, Gauff put her hands on her head, looked shocked and overcome with emotions towards her box. Tears trickling down her eyes, she ran to the net and exchanged a few words with Venus before bathing in her victory.

Even after the match she failed to put words to her emotion. "I don't really know how to feel right now. It's the first time I have cried after winning a match," Gauff said.

It was a huge occasion for Gauff and she shared that she had to keep herself calm despite the magnanimity of the situation.

"I had to tell myself to be calm, I had never played here before. I had to tell myself that the lines were the same and the size of the court was the same even if everything else was bigger."
Gauff also revealed the words she and Venus exchanged at the net.

"She just told me 'congratulations and keep going and good luck.' I told her, 'I wouldn't be here if not for her, she's so inspiring, I always wanted to tell her that. I met her the other night, didn't have the guts to do so."

Gauff's parents cheered every point she won and every time the 15-year-old would play a brilliant point, she would look towards her box and pump her fists in celebration.

According to a statement from Stalin, party trade union leader M Shanmugam and senior advocate P Wilson are the nominees for the biennial election, slated on July 18.

“The other seat is being allotted to MDMK as agreed upon earlier,” Stalin said.

The DMK had agreed to allot one Rajya Sabha seat to the MDMK as part of their pre-poll agreement for the Lok Sabha election.

Biennial elections to fill six Rajya Sabha seats from the state will be held on July 18. They are being held to fill the vacancies that will arise due to the retirement of sitting members — four of the AIADMK and one each from the DMK and the CPI — next month.

Both the ruling AIADMK and the DMK can send three MPs each to the Upper House by virtue of their respective strength in the state assembly.

The retiring members are: T Rathinavel, Dr V Maitreyan, K R Arjunan and Dr R Lakshmanan (all AIADMK), Kanimozhi (DMK) and D Raja (CPI), whose terms end on July 24

Incidentally, Kanimozhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tuticorin constituency in the state in the general election

According to the EC schedule, the notification for the Rajya Sabha biennial polls would be issued on Monday and the last date for filing nominations is July 8

Scrutiny of nominations will be taken up the next day and the last date for withdrawal will be July 11, it said.

Polling, if required, will be held from 9am-4pm on July 18 and the counting the same day at 5 pm, it said.

The AIADMK has 123 MLAs and the DMK 100 members in the 234-member Assembly with two vacancies.

DMK ally Congress has seven legislators, while the IUML one. AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran is an Independent member.

 A candidate needs 34 votes to get elected.

New Zealand’s Trent Boult became the second bowler to take a hat-trick in the 2019 ICC World Cup during their group stage encounter against Australia at Lord’s on Saturday June 29,2019

Trent Boult got rid of Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Starc and Jason Behrendorff off successive deliveries as Australia were restricted to 243-9 in the first innings.

Usman Khawaja was looking like getting Australia to a bigger total and was on 88 when a well-placed yorker did him in after he shuffled across and exposed his stumps.

He then gave Starc a taste of his own medicine, bowling a yorker that tailed in and got under the bat before he could get it down.

Behrendorff was struck on the pad by a full ball and given out and not reviewed it but all that did was delay the inevitable celebrations for the left-arm pacer.

This was the 11th hat-trick in World Cup history and the first from a New Zealand bowler. Boult also became the first player from his country to bag two hat-tricks in ODI cricket.

In the match against England, chasing 338 runs, Rohit opened the innings along with KL Rahul. Rahul fell in the third over and Rohit was then joined by Virat Kohli. The duo put together a 138-run partnership, providing stability to the chase in the process.

Sri Lanka registered a consolation win in the ICC World Cup 2019 at Chester-le-Street on Monday July 1,2019 beating the West Indies by 23 runs despite Nicholas Pooran scoring a fighting maiden ODI century.

A ton from Avishka Fernando followed by another good showing from Lasith Malinga meant West Indies could score only 315-9 chasing 339.

West Indies’ hopes of a fast start were dashed when Malinga got rid of both Sunil Ambris and Shai Hope in quick succession.

Chris Gayle passed Brian Lara to become the highest ODI run-scorer for the West Indies but failed to convert another start and had to walk after holing out to Jeffrey Vandersay off Kasun Rajitha’s bowling.

Shimron Hetmyer was run out by Dhananjaya de Silva but a 61-run stand for the fifth wicket between Nicholas Pooran and Jason Holder revived the flagging run chase.

Holder would depart for a patient 26 but Pooran would continue to wage a lone battle, even after Carlos Brathwaite was dismissed cheaply.

He put together an 83-run partnership that Fabian Allen that gave them some hope of a win with both players striking the ball well.

Allen would bring up his half-century but was run out shortly thereafter after a mix-up and his exasperation at being out told the story.

Pooran battled on and brought up his century and was looking in good touch but had to depart after nicking one behind off Angelo Mathews – who was bowling for the first time since December 2017.

The wicket all but ended West Indies’ chances of registering a win, rendering the remaining 2 overs a formality

Earlier, Fernando smashed his first one-day international century as Sri Lanka scored an imposing 338-6 in the first innings
