2018 Gujarat Foundation Day - Tuesday May 01,2018

Gujarat Foundation Day is observed across the state with parades and other government events.

The main parade takes place on the Sabarmati Waterfront in Ahmedabad.

1.     Gujarat Foundation Day marks the foundation of the state of the Gujarat. It was a result of the bifurcation of the Bombay State into the present states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

2.     The Bombay State of post-Independence India was largely coastal and had included Marathi and Gujarati-speaking regions. It had been expanded with the addition of Saurashtra, Vidarbha and Marathwada under the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which reorganised India's existing states and princely states on the lines of language. The new Bombay State, which was today's Maharashtra and Gujarat combined, came into existence on November 1, 1956.

3.     The Gujarati speakers of the new Bombay State had demanded their own linguistic state, instead of the bilingual Bombay State that the 1956 reorganisation had created.

4.     This demand was spearheaded by the Mahagujarat Movement. The term Mahagujarat had been coined before Independence and had at that time included the Sindh region, which had gone to Pakistan in the Partition.

5.     The Mahagujarat Movement's goals were mutually complementary with the corresponding Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, which demanded a separate Marathi-speaking state out of the expanded Bombay State.

6.     Both states officially came into existence on May 1, 1960 as a result of the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960. So, it is not just Gujarat Foundation Day, but Maharashtra Day as well. The Gujarat government observes the day with parades and by announcing new government schemes and programmes.

7.     While both the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the Mahagujarat Movement had goals that were mutually complementary, and eventually successful, elements within them ended up clashing over which of the new states would get the financial powerhouse of Bombay.

8.     Bombay's population was a majority of Marathi speakers. But the economic elite of the city was loaded with Gujaratis and the Parsis, who were closer in history and alignment with the Gujaratis than with the Marathis. This became known unofficially as the 'Battle of Bombay'.

9.     The elite in Bombay feared that a Maharashtra government based in Bombay would end up hurting their economic status by focusing more on the vast rural area under its control rather than be concerned about the urban needs of the metropolis. Some voices even proposed that because of these concerns, Bombay should be an independent city or even a Union Territory.

10.    However, Bombay ended up being handed over to Maharashtra. This caused a large part of the city's Gujarati elite to shift base to the new state of Gujarat, in fear of the backlash from the Marathi chauvinists who had come together for the creation of the state of Maharashtra

2018 Maharashtra Day - Tuesday May 01,2018

One of India's largest states - in terms of size, population and economy - is set to celebrate its foundation day today.

Maharashtra Diwas, or Maharashtra Day, is a state holiday across the massive western Indian state.

It will see celebrations across the state, with the traditional address in Mumbai's Shivaji Park by the Governor.

1.Maharashtra Day marks the foundation of the state of the Maharashtra. It was caused by the bifurcation of the Bombay State into the present states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

3.     The reorganisation of 1956 led to the rise of two movements - Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and Mahagujarat Movement. These movements demanded the break-up of the new Bombay State into one Marathi-speaking state and one Gujarati-speaking state. These movements laid the base for what we know today as the states of Maharashtra and Gujarat.

4.     Both states officially came into existence on May 1, 1960 as a result of the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960. So, it is not just Maharashtra Day, but also celebrated as Gujarat Day in Gujarat.

5.     The Maharashtra government celebrates it, usually with the Governor addressing a rally at the famed Shivaji Maidan in Mumbai. The state government also usually announces a number of schemes and programmes on this day.

6.     While both the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the Maha
gujarat Movement had goals that were mutually complementary, and eventually successful, elements within them ended up clashing over which of the new states would get the financial powerhouse of Bombay.

7.     Bombay's population was a majority of Marathi speakers. But the economic elite of the city was loaded with Gujaratis and the Parsis, who were closer in history and alignment with the Gujaratis than with the Marathis. This became known unofficially as the 'Battle of Bombay'.

9.     However, Bombay ended up being handed over to Maharashtra. This caused a large part of the city's Gujarati elite to shift base to the new state of Gujarat, in fear of the backlash from the Marathi chauvinists who had come together for the creation of the state of Maharashtra.

10.    Maharashtra Day, more than anything else, is a victory celebration for a Marathi political movement based on language. The vociferous mobilisation of the late 1950s and early 1960s has left a lasting impact on the politics of the state, laying the ground for the formation of Marathi and Maratha chauvinist parties like the Shiv Sena, and subsequently the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)

2017-18 UEFA Champions LeagueSecond Leg SF A S Roma Vs Liverpool @Olimpico Wednesday May 02,2018

In the First Leg SF,Liverpool beat A S Roma 5-2

MATCH FACTS

  • No team has ever overturned a 5-2 first-leg defeat away from home in the European Cup/Champions League. The last time there was such a scoreline in a first leg of the competition was in 1999-00, with Valencia knocking out Lazio 5-3 on aggregate (5-2, 0-1).
  • Liverpool are yet to lose to Roma in the European Cup/Champions League in four meetings (W2 D2), with one of those draws in the 1984 final (1-1), which Liverpool won 4-2 on penalties in the Stadio Olimpico.
  • This is Liverpool's 10th appearance in the semi-final of the European Cup - they've progressed to the final on seven of the previous nine occasions, losing only in 1964-65 against Inter Milan and in 2007-08 against Chelsea.
  • Roma are appearing in their first European semi-final for 27 years, when they faced Brondby in the Uefa Cup in 1990-91. Their only previous European Cup semi-final was in 1983-84, when they eliminated Dundee United to face Liverpool in the final.
  • Roma are the only team yet to concede a single goal at home in the Champions League this season (five games). They have also won all of their past four such games at the Olimpico (including two by three clear goals), but have never won five in a row.
  • Meanwhile, Liverpool are the only unbeaten side in the Champions League this season (W7 D4).
  • The Reds have scored 38 goals in this season's competition, the most by an English team in a single Champions League campaign. In fact, since the new format was introduced in 2003-04, only Real Madrid (41 goals in 2013-14) scored more than Liverpool have this season.
  • Liverpool are the first side in Champions League history to see three players score eight or more goals in a single season (Salah 10, Firmino 10, Mane eight).
  • Mohamed Salah has scored in each of his past five Champions League starts for Liverpool, a feat only Steven Gerrard had previously accomplished for the club (between October 2007 and February 2008).
  • James Milner has provided eight assists in the Champions League this season (nine including qualifying), the joint most in a single campaign in the competition proper since the new format was introduced in 2003-04, level with Neymar in 16-17

Liverpool held off a spirited Roma fightback to reach the Champions League final 7-6 on aggregate despite losing 4-2 in a hectic second leg SF in Rome.

Jurgen Klopp's men reached their eighth European Cup final and first since 2007 where they will play two-time holders Real Madrid in Kiev on May 26,2018

  • The Champions League final will be a repeat of the 1981 European Cup final, in which Liverpool beat Real Madrid 1-0.
  • Liverpool v Real Madrid will be the third final to have been played in the competition as both the European Cup (1956 to 1992) and Champions League (1993 onwards), after Ajax v Juventus and Ajax v AC Milan.
  • With 13 goals over the two legs, this is the highest scoring Champions League semi-final ever, overtaking Monaco v Juventus (4-6) in 1998.
  • Roma conceded twice in the opening 25 minutes, having kept a clean sheet in each of their five previous home Champions League games this season.
  • Liverpool have scored 20 away goals in the Champions League this season, equalling the record for a single campaign in the competition (level with Real Madrid 2013-14).
  • The Reds also became the third team to score 40 goals within a single season in the Champions League, after Barcelona (45 in 1999-00) and Real Madrid (41 in 2013-14).
  • Sadio Mane's strike was his ninth in the Champions League in just his 10th appearance - no player has scored more in their opening 10 games in the competition (level with Harry Kane and Simone Inzaghi).
  • Mohamed Salah (10), Roberto Firmino (10) and Mane (nine) have scored 29 goals between them in the Champions League this season, making them the highest scoring trio at a club in a single campaign in the competition.

Two Malaysian badminton players banned 20, 15 Years for Match-fixing

Two Malaysian badminton players have been hit with career-ending bans of 20 and 15 years respectively after being found guilty of corruption and match-fixing, the sport's governing body said Wednesday May 02,2018

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) said former world junior champion Zulfadli Zulkiffli, 25, was banned for 20 years and fined $25,000, while Tan Chun Seang, 31, was barred for 15 years and fined $15,000.

They were found guilty of breaching the BWF code of conduct in relation to "betting, wagering and irregular match results", said a statement from the body.

A BWF ethics panel, which held hearings in February in Singapore into the case, found both players "engaged in corruption offences over a significant period and a significant number of tournaments" dating back to 2013.

Zulfadli committed more violations over a longer period and it was proven he had manipulated the results of four matches, the BWF said.

Their suspension began from January 12, the date on which both players were provisionally suspended by the BWF.

Neither player is affiliated with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), but Tan was in Malaysia's squad for the prestigious Thomas Cup in 2010.

He was banned by the BAM from competing in Asian tournaments for two years after quitting the national team in 2011.

In 2011, Zulfadli beat current world champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark to clinch the World Junior Championships.

Badminton has been hit by cheating scandals before.

At the 2012 Olympics, eight women's doubles players were disqualified for trying to lose group games to gain an easier quarter-final draw.

And in 2014 the BWF asked police to investigate claims by two Danish players, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus and Kim Astrup, that they were approached by a Malaysian man to throw matches.

Malaysian badminton was previously hit by controversy in 2015, when former world number one Lee Chong Wei received an eight-month ban for doping.

Other Indian cities that registered very high levels of PM2.5 pollutants were Kanpur, Faridabad, Gaya, Patna, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Patiala and Jodhpur followed by Ali Subah Al-Salem in Kuwait and a few cities in China and Mongolia.

In terms of PM10 levels, 13 cities in India figured among the 20 most-polluted cities of the world in 2016.

The World Health Organisation has called upon member-countries in its Southeast Asia Region to aggressively address the double burden of household and ambient (outdoor) air pollution, saying the region, which comprises India, accounts for 34 pc or 2.4 million of the seven million premature deaths caused by household and ambient air pollution together globally every year.

Of the 3.8 million deaths caused by household air pollution globally, the region accounts for 1.5 million or 40 percent deaths, and of the 4.2 million global deaths due to ambient air pollution, 1.3 million or 30 percent are reported from the region, it said.

The PM2.5 includes pollutants like sulfate, nitrate and black carbon, which pose the greatest risk to human health.

WHO's global urban air pollution database measured the levels of fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) from more than 4,300 cities in 108 countries, according to which ambient air pollution alone caused some 4.2 million deaths in 2016, while household air pollution from cooking with polluting fuels and technologies caused an estimated 3.8 million deaths in the same period.

Since 2016, over 1,000 additional cities have been added to WHO's database, which shows more countries are measuring and taking action to reduce air pollution than ever before. "WHO estimates that around 7 million people die every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air that penetrate deep into the lungs and cardiovascular system, causing diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections, including pneumonia," the report said.

According to the report, more than 90 percent of air pollution-related deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries (including India), mainly in Asia and Africa, followed by low- and middle-income countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region, Europe and the Americas.

"Around 3 billion people, more than 40 percent of the world's population, still do not have access to clean cooking fuels and technologies in their homes, the main source of household air pollution," it said.

It said the WHO recognises air pollution is a critical risk factor for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), causing an estimated 24 percent of all adult deaths from heart disease, 25 percent from stroke, 43 percent from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and 29 percent from lung cancer.

The report, however, stated countries are making efforts and taking measures and in this context, referred to India's Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, which it said, in just two years, has provided 37 million women living below the poverty line with free LPG connections to support them to switch to clean household energy use. India targets to reach 80 million households by 2020.

All countries in the region are making efforts to expand availability of clean fuels and technologies, however, over 60 percent population do not have clean fuel. The combined effects of household air pollution and ambient air pollution become increasingly hard to address if not tackled early, Poonam Khetrapal Singh, regional director, WHO Southeast Asia, said.

"Air pollution needs to be brought under control with urgent and effective action. Non-communicable diseases are the leading cause of deaths globally and in the region, and air pollution contributes significantly to NCDs such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease and lung cancer.

"Cleaning up the air we breathe will help prevent NCDs, particularly among women and vulnerable groups such as children, those already ill and the elderly," Singh said.

"Many of the world's megacities exceed WHO's guideline levels for air quality by more than 5 times, representing a major risk to people's health," Maria Neira, director of the Department of Public Health, Social and Environmental Determinants of Health at WHO, said, adding, there is an acceleration of political interest to deal with this global public health challenge.

"Air pollution threatens us all, but the poorest and most marginalised people bear the brunt of the burden. It is unacceptable that over 3 billion people, most of them women and children, are still breathing deadly smoke every day from using polluting stoves and fuels in their homes," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of WHO.

Major sources of air pollution from particulate matter include inefficient use of energy by households, industry, agriculture and transport sectors, and coal-fired power plants. In some regions, sand and desert dust, waste burning and deforestation are additional sources of air pollution.

"Air pollution does not recognise borders. Improving air quality demands sustained and coordinated government action at all levels," the WHO said.

Before 102 Not Out, a look at Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor’s films together

Before 102 Not Out, a look at Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor’s films together

102 Not Out will hit the screens on May 4, 2018

Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor, have paired up after a gap of 27 years in this week’s release 102 Not Out.

They were seen together for the last time in 1991 film, Ajooba.

They ruled the Indian silver screen during the 70s and 80s.

If Amitabh Bachchan was the Angry Young Man, Rishi Kapoor was the man who did romantic roles in a style all his own.

Here’s a list of all the films they have worked together in

Kabhi Kabhie (1976): Late Yash Chopra presented the complexities of relationships in this film. While Amitabh Bachchan’s intense lover Amit was at the helm of affairs, Vikram (Rishi Kapoor) takes the baton from him in the second half. The highlight of the film is heated discussions between its primary characters.

Amar Akbar Anthony (1977): One of the most entertaining films in the history of Bollywood, this one presented Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor as brothers who were separated in childhood. Vinod Khanna played the third brother. Director Manmohan Desai’s formula film is known for comic scenes and hit songs.

Naseeb (1981): Isn’t the title song already playing in your head? Manmohan Desai returned to his tried and tested recipe of glorious coincidences and cast Amitabh and Rishi as brothers who fall in love with two sisters. The film’s climax is a masterclass in handling many characters and doing justice to each of them.

Coolie (1983): Prayag Raj and Manmohan Desai are credited as the directors of Coolie, but Desai’s heavy influence is evident on the film. Once again the trick was to charm the audience with a separated in childhood kind of drama, and once again the makers succeeded. Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor played cousins who reunite in the end keeping the tradition of happy endings alive.

Ajooba (1991): Big B and Rishi Kapoor played associates who fight a tyrant in this film directed by Shashi Kapoor. Their pairing was the highlight of the film, but it didn’t work at the box office.
They have also worked together in films like Delhi 6 and Om Shanti Om, but they were more like cameos.

A complete guide to the mid-season transfer window and how it works

For the first time in its history since its decade-long inception, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to welcome a mid-season transfer window.

Just like transfers take place in football during a particular window where teams from different leagues buy and sell players, the cash-rich Twenty20 league will also see the same idea being incorporated.

What is it?

With the tournament having already reached the half-way stage where teams have played seven matches out of their standard 14 round robin matches, many players haven’t quite delivered for their teams or have not found game time because of stiff competition. And the mid-season transfer window provides an opportunity for such players to turn around their career and make an impression.

By now, teams have already figured out players who they wish to keep for the remainder of the season. And the transfer window not only benefits players but also teams as they can replace the deadwood in their squad with new talent.

When does it begin?

The IPL mid-season transfer window will be activated from Match 28 (April 29) to Match 42 (May 10). Franchises can make the most of these 12 days to revamp their squads.

How does it work?

Both uncapped and capped (both domestic and foreign) players are eligible for the transfer window.

But there is a criterion to be followed here - the players must have played less than two matches for their franchise so far.

Going by these rules, players such as Adam Milne, JP Duminy (Both Mumbai Indians), Sandeep Lamichhane (Delhi Daredevils), Alex Hales (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Colin de Grandhomme, Moeen Ali (Both Royal Challengers Bangalore) and David Willey (Chennai Super Kings) can be swapped.

However, both parties must agree on the move in advance and then go ahead with the transfer

Embarrassing statistics confirm 3 out of 5 Indians use mobile phones while driving

Posing a serious threat to themselves and others on the road, Indian drivers are consistently and rather quite shamelessly using their mobile phones while driving.

According to a recent survey, three out of five have admitted to being on the phone while driving. Of this, North India leads with 62% compared to South with 52%.

At the same time, only 1 in 4 Indians has admitted that they have been caught by cops breaking this law.

Over-speeding additionally posed another problem as 60% of respondents admitted to over-speeding in Kerala, followed by 51% in Delhi, and 28% in Punjab.

Conducted in collaboration with Nissan India and Kantar IMRB, the Nissan Connected Families of India survey deep dives into the day-to-day driving habits of Indians across 20 states, ranging from over-speeding, phone usage, punctuality and vigilance to trust.

When it comes to trust, a large percentage of women respondents (nearly 64%) trust their spouse when it comes to driving, as against just 37% of men who could say the same.

Children, however, scored consistently low on the trust score with 30% respondents rating them the least.

The survey also identified the increased need for vigilance as respondents (72% in Tamil Nadu, 70% in Kerala, 57% in Punjab and 66% in Delhi NCR), said that they would always want to monitor their children while they are driving.

“The findings of the Nissan Connected Families of India survey have not only revealed some startling facts but also raised a need for in-car technology and connectivity for the safety of the loved ones. This has been further affirmed by the fact that 53% respondents expressed the desire to be connected to their family even while driving,” Jerome Saigot, Managing Director, Nissan Motor India Pvt. Ltd. said.

“At Nissan, we keep the consumers at the heart of everything we do. As a part of Nissan’s Intelligent Mobility, we have introduced NissanConnect to make the car more responsive. Equipped with 50+ features to ensure safety, security, and convenience, NissanConnect is the 1st and only telematics control unit based Connected Car Technology in the industry,” he added.
