Karnataka Govt to Scrap Rs 1,761 Cr 6.72-km long Steel Flyover Project in Bengaluru Following Protests

In a major victory for citizens, the proposed Rs 1,761-crore steel flyover in Bengaluru has been scrapped following opposition from environmentalists and rights groups who claimed that more than 800 trees will be cut for the project.
As protests mounted against the project, Bengaluru Development Minister KJ George told that the steel flyover will not be constructed. "The plan has been cancelled," he said.

The 6.72-km long flyover project by Bengaluru Development Authority (BDA) was meant to decongest city traffic.
The project faced opposition as it allegedly involved felling of over 800 trees. Farmers too had opposed the project. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium too had reportedly said that ramps may block the view of the sky.
Actor Prakash Belwadi, member of Citizens for Bengaluru, said, “We're grateful to Chief Minister of Karnataka for listening to people's protests. We are hopeful that this citizen awakening in Bengaluru will help shape a better city with greater public participation in governance.”
NGO Namma Bengaluru founded by Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrashekar had earlier moved the National Green Tribunal stating that a large amount of green cover in the city would be lost due to the project. Subsequently, the Chennai bench of NGT had issued a stay on the project.
“I congratulate the government to for dropping the plan, one good move in last four years. I have always supported the initiatives when it comes to development of Bangalore, but it is impossible to work with the present government,” he said.

Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rises to 50.7 in February 2017

The Nikkei India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 50.7 in February 2017 from 50.4 in January 2017. “It was above the neutral 50 value for the second month running and indicated that the health of the sector improved to a greater extent than in January,” Nikkei said in a statement on Wednesday. A reading above 50 on the index indicates growth while that below 50 shows contraction.
Business activity grew in two of the three monitored market groups, with the capital goods sector being the only exception.
The data comes a day after the Central Statistics Office released the GDP growth estimates for the third quarter of the fiscal. It pegged growth in gross value addition in the manufacturing sector at a robust 8.3 per cent for Q3 and 7.7 per cent for FY17.
However, the latest Nikkei reading was much weaker than the long-run series average (54.2), largely reflecting below-trend rates of growth for output and new business, it added.
“With growth rates well below par, the sector still has many areas to develop before it can fire on all cylinders. Businesses don’t yet seem convinced as to the sustainability of the rebound as highlighted by cuts to payroll numbers and destocking initiatives,” said Pollyanna De Lima, economist at IHS Markit and author of the report.
But, worryingly, input price inflation rose in February at its fastest pace in two-and-a-half years. Manufacturers reported higher purchasing costs for metals, chemicals, energy and plastics.
Similarly, output price inflation also accelerated in February and was the strongest since October 2013, as companies tried to protect margins in the face of rising cost burdens.

Airtel Rated as India's 'Fastest Mobile Network for 2016'

Indias largest telecommunications services provider Bharti Airtel has been rated the 'Fastest Mobile Network for 2016', leading broadband testing and network diagnostic application Ookla said on Thursday.
The findings were based on analysis of millions of internet speed tests logged on ‘modern devices' by mobile customers across the country using Ookla's popular Speedtest app.
The results include all mobile tests, regardless of connection technology.
"We are delighted to receive this recognition from a global leader like Ookla and it is yet another validation of our efforts to build a world-class smartphone network," said Ajai Puri, Director-Operations (India and South Asia), Bharti Airtel.
The latest speed tests published by the telecom regulatory TRAI also rated Airtel as the fastest 4G network in India.
"This award recognises Airtel's commitment to delivering fast speeds and a strong network to their customers across India," added Jamie Steven, COO at Speedtest by Ookla.
Airtel has been making significant investments towards building a future-ready network under "Project Leap" -- its national network transformation initiative.

RJio unveils new tariff plans starting at Rs19 /day Wednesday March 01,2017

Reliance Jio on Wednesday March 01,2017 launched new tariff plans starting from ₹19 a day. The plans offer big discount to users who subscribe before March 31 under the Prime Membership plan.

For example, for ₹499, subscribers of prime membership will get 60GB data with a daily cap of 2GB. Non-members get only 5GB. Similarly, for ₹303, prime members get 60GB data while others get only 2.5GB. RJio has also launched an annual plan for ₹9,999. This is the first time an operator has offered a plan valid for the entire year. Voice is free on all plans.
The discounted membership plan is being targeted at retaining the 100 million users who have been using the RJio services for free since September. These users have been given time till March 31 to switch to prime membership by paying an upfront one-time fee of ₹99.
While the prime membership tariffs are clearly much lower than the tariff plans offered by incumbent operators, RJio tariffs for non-prime members is higher comparable to incumbent operators. For example, Airtel is offering 4GB data for 28 days under its ₹345 plan. In comparison, RJio is giving 2.5GB data for ₹303. RJio strategy clearly seems to be aimed at acquiring all cost conscious subscribers by March 31 with the prime membership scheme.
Huge demand
Meanwhile, users who wanted to switch to the new Prime membership faced difficulties as the telecom operator was unable to cope up with the huge demand. There are over 100 million RJio users currently who have to either switch to the new plan or give up connection.
A number of users complained that they could not switch over to the new plan. An executive working at RJio store said that the demand from users was so high that the servers that manage customer billing were running full capacity. “It should ease up in a day or two. Initially, there could be issues but these are just teething problems,” the executive said.
Reliance Jio has been offering free services to users since September. But from April 1, it will start charging.
Reliance Jio users can enrol into the Prime programme via MyJio app or by visiting the nearest retail outlet. “Most of the stores owned by Reliance are equipped with enough capacity to handle the rush. The problem could be in the third party owned smaller stores,” said another executive

World Health Organisation(WHO) Releases 1st ever list of 12 most 'dangerous superbugs' – Most of these bacteria have existence in India

The World Health Organisation(WHO) for the first time has published a list of antibiotic-resistant 'priority pathogens' - a catalogue of 12 families of Bacteria that pose the greatest threat to human health.

The list, which was released on Monday Feb 27,2017, highlights the urgent need to adress the alarming rise in antibiotic resistance in the world.
The list, which culminates in particular the threat of gram-negative bacteria that are resistant to multiple antibiotics, is a bad news for India as most of these12 dangerous superbugs  have existence in the country.
As part of WHO’s efforts to address growing global resistance to antimicrobial medicines, the list was drawn up in a bid to guide and promote research and development (R&D) of new antibiotics.
"This list is a new tool to ensure R&D responds to urgent public health needs," says Dr Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO's Assistant Director-General for Health Systems and Innovation. "Antibiotic resistance is growing, and we are fast running out of treatment options. If we leave it to market forces alone, the new antibiotics we most urgently need are not going to be developed in time."
According to the urgency of need for new antibiotics, the WHO list is divided into three categories - critical, high and medium priority.

Critical

Three bacteria were listed as critical - They include -
  • Acinetobacter baumannii, carbapenem-resistant
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa, carbapenem-resistant
  • Enterobacteriaceae, carbapenem-resistant, ESBL-producing
They can cause severe and often deadly infections such as bloodstream infections and pneumonia. These bacteria have become resistant to a large number of antibiotics, including carbapenems and third generation cephalosporins - the best available antibiotics for treating multi-drug resistant bacteria.

High priority

Six others were listed as high priority for new antibiotics. These are a bunch of multidrug-resistant microbes namely -
  • Enterococcus faecium, vancomycin-resistant
  • Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant, vancomycin-intermediate and resistant
  • Helicobacter pylori, clarithromycin-resistant
  • Campylobacter spp., fluoroquinolone-resistant
  • Salmonellae, fluoroquinolone-resistant
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae, cephalosporin-resistant, fluoroquinolone-resistant

Medium

This category includes three other bacteria that are becoming increasingly resistant to available drugs. They are:
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae, penicillin-non-susceptible
  • Haemophilus influenzae, ampicillin-resistant
  • Shigella spp., fluoroquinolone-resistant
Tuberculosis - whose resistance to traditional treatment has been growing in recent years - was not included in the WHO's list because it is targeted by other, dedicated programmes.
The list is intended to spur governments to put in place policies that incentivize basic science and advanced R&D by both publicly funded agencies and the private sector investing in new antibiotic discovery.
While more R&D is vital, alone, it cannot solve the problem. WHO suggests that there must also be better prevention of infections and appropriate use of existing antibiotics, as well as rational use of any new antibiotics that are developed in future to address the resistance.

Malaysia Cancels Visa-Free Entry for North Koreans effective March 06,2017

Malaysia has cancelled a visa-free travel deal with Pyongyang as a diplomatic spat deepens over the assassination of the half-brother of North Korea's leader

The government implemented the change on the grounds of national security, the Malaysian news agency quoted the country's deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as saying.
The cancellation will take effect on March 06,2017 , after which North Koreans entering Malaysia will be required to obtain a visa, the report added.
Before the murder of Kim Jong-Nam at Kuala Lumpur International Airport on February 13, the two countries enjoyed relatively warm ties, with some bilateral trade and citizens of both nations entitled to travel to the other under a unique reciprocal visa-free deal.
The cancellation comes after members of the powerful ruling party, the United Malays National Organisation, held a protest outside the North Korean embassy last week and demanded Malaysia end the free visa ruling.
Two female suspects in the attack, Indonesian Siti Aisyah, 25, and Doan Thi Huong, 28, from Vietnam, were charged with murder on Wednesday.
Malaysia has arrested one North Korean and named several others as suspects.
Seoul says the government of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un ordered the killing of Kim Jong-Nam, who died after his face was rubbed with a powerful nerve agent, and engaged two outsiders to carry it out.
The spectacular killing sparked an international probe and lurid stories of Pyongyang's Cold War-style tradecraft.
North Korea, which has not acknowledged the dead man's identity, has vehemently protested the investigation, saying Malaysia is in cahoots with its enemies.
Malaysia had already recalled its envoy to Pyongyang and also summoned the North Korean ambassador to Kuala Lumpur.

As many as 43 winners in the just concluded Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are facing criminal cases, says a report.
This implies that nearly 19% of the newly elected corporators have criminal charges against them, including for offences like attempt to murder and rape, as per an analysis of the affidavits of 225 winners out of the total 227 in BMC polls.
The analysis was recently done by NGOs Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
Maharashtra Election Watch's state-coordinator Sharad Kumar said, "As long as people don't go out to vote in large numbers, political parties will pick winning candidates who have money and muscle power."
According to the report compiled by the two NGOs, Shiv Sena's Umesh Subhash Mane, who won from ward no. 115, has in his affidavit declared a case related to attempt to murder (Indian Penal Code section 307) against him.
Besides, three of the winners have cases of rape (IPC section 376) and assault or criminal force to woman with an intent to outrage her modesty (IPC section 354) against them, the report said.
Out of the 225 winners whose affidavits were analysed, 22 from Shiv Sena, 11 from BJP, 3 from MNS, 2 from Congress, one each from NCP, SP and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) and 2 independents are facing criminal cases, it said.
The remaining two affidavits out of the total 227 winners were not analysed as they were not available at the time of making the report, the NGOs said in a statement.
"This time the vote percentage has increased for the first time since the last 25 years. Similarly, the number of candidates with criminal background has also gone down," Kumar said.
"Ever since affidavits have been made compulsory for candidates, voters have become aware of their background. The number of candidates with criminal cases against them is also coming down," he claimed, without elaborating on the figures.
The report also mentioned that among the winners, 144 are crorepatis, while five winners have declared assets below Rs 4 lakh. Besides, seven winners have declared their total annual income to be over Rs 50 lakh.
As per the affidavits, five winners have declared their ages to be between 21 and 24 years, 154 of the new corporators are aged between 25 and 50, while 66 are in the 51 to 80 years age bracket.
In the recently concluded polls to the 227-member BMC, Shiv Sena won 84 seats, BJP-82, Congress-31, NCP-9, MNS-7, SP-6, MIM-3, Akhil Bharatiya Sena-1 and Independents-4
