In a First in Meghalaya, Election Commission of India(ECI) Brings Out Ballot Paper in Braille for Visually Impaired

The Election Commission of India(ECI)has made arrangements to issue braille-enabled ballot papers at all polling booths in the state, as part of its efforts to ensure wider participation of voters in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor said.

The EC initiative, a first in Meghalaya, will facilitate more than 800 visually impaired electorates to vote by a secret ballot, he said

"We are making preparations to make the election more inclusive We have already mapped over 4,500 persons with disabilities to ensure that they get priority at the polling booths," Kharkongor told  on Friday March 29,2019


The ballot paper pasted on the electronic voting machines (EVMs) will have the names and symbol of candidates in braille alphabets, he added.

Welcoming the move, the visually challenged voters in the state said the initiative will ensure that they get to cast votes independently, without having to depend on anyone.

CPI(M)'s Biraj Deka is the youngest candidate in the Lok Sabha polls

The youngest candidate in the upcoming general election is going to contest from Kokrajhar constituency of Assam.

Biraj Deka, the candidate from Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is only 25-years-old. He is going to contest the Bodo dominated seat of Assam.

A post graduate in English Literature from Bodoland University, Deka was born in Goreswar on July 30, 1993.He completed his graduation from Goreswar College. Deka is the vice president of Student Federation of India’s (SFI) Assam unit.

Kokrajhar Lok Sabha seat, one of the 14 in Assam, is reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

Anti-corruption activist Zuzana Caputova has been confirmed as the 5th President of Slovakia, making her the country's first female head of the State.

Zuzana Caputova, a lawyer by  profession, defeated Maros Sefcovic, a candidate nominated by Slovakia's ruling party.

She becomes Slovakia's fifth president since the country gained independence after the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993.

In the second round of voting held on Saturday March 30,2019, Caputova received 58.40 per cent of votes, while Sefcovic got 41.59 per cent of votes

In the first round of polls held on March 16, none of the 13 candidates in the fray received an absolute majority of votes with Caputova and Sefcovic getting 40.57 per cent and 18.66 per cent respectively

2019 Tamil Nadu Lok Sabha Election April 18,2019 - Contest of crorepatis: Dravidian majors’ list reveals cash, assets

For the first time, both the AIADMK and DMK, which are contesting in 20 Lok Sabha constituencies each, have nominated only candidates who own crores of rupees in cash and kind, data obtained from Election Commission has revealed.

In the DMK-led alliance, out of the 39 candidates, 35 have declared assets worth more than one crore rupees. Congress which is contesting for nine seats in the DMK alliance has nominated eight crorepatis.

As far as the AIADMK-led alliance is concerned, 36 candidates, including all the five from BJP, have declared moveable and immovable assets worth more than Rs 1 crore.

Congress party takes the credit of nominating the richest candidate in the Lok Sabha poll in the State for the second time. Kannniyakumari candidate H Vasanthakumar tops richest candidate list with an asset of Rs 417.49 crore. His asset has gone up by 46 per cent from Rs 285.77 crore declared in 2014. He also has the highest liability of Rs 154 crore. Second richest candidate in the two major alliances are AC Shanmugham of New Justice Party, a constituent of AIADMK-led alliance, declared assets worth Rs 125 crore.

Poorest candidate in terms of assets is CPI(M)’s Madurai candidate Su Venkatesan, who is a Sahitya Akademi award winner. He has declared assets worth Rs 18.11 lakh. Second lowest asset holder is PMK’s Vadivel Ravanan. Contesting from Villupuram, he has Rs 19.25 lakh.

The number of crorepati candidates nominated by major political parties in the Lok Sabha polls has gone in this election compared to the 2014 LS polls. As per the affidavit filed by the candidates, 74 per cent of the candidates fielded by DMK, AIADMK, Congress and DMDK were crorepatis in the 2014 election when compared to 55 per cent in the 2009 polls.

Poorest candidate in terms of assets in DMK is S Ramalingam (Mayiladuthurai) whose asset is valued at Rs 1.33 crore while the richest DMK candidate is former Union Minister of State S Jagathrakshakan (Arakkonam) with Rs 114.69 crore. In AIADMK, the richest candidate is C Mahendran, who has assets worth Rs 31.34 crore. Meanwhile, BJP’s Nainar Nagendran has declared assets worth Rs 102 crore.

Asian and the Middle Eastern countries dominated the top 10 list of most air polluted countries, according to the report. Every city in the Middle East that was included in the study exceeded the World Health Organization’s annual exposure guideline for fine particulate matter. The map below shows pollution by country using the US Air Quality Index.

Japan's ANA All Nippon Airways named the cleanest airline in the world

Japan's ANA All Nippon Airways was named the cleanest airline in the world, as part of the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2018.

The Japanese carrier claimed the top spot ahead of Taiwan's EVA Air and South Korea's Asiana Airlines in a top 30 list dominated by Asian companies.

Passengers were asked to rate the standard and quality of aircraft cabins for a global survey conducted by UK-based aviation industry reviewer Skytrax.

Seat areas, tables, carpets, cabin panels and washrooms are all part of the overall score.

Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Qatar Airways, Swiss International Air Lines, Hainan Airlines and Lufthansa make up the rest of the top 10.

Top-rated airlines for cleanliness by continent included South African Airways in Africa, Air New Zealand in Australia/Pacific, Air Canada in North America, Azul Airlines in South America and Swiss International Airlines in Europe.

Cleanliness is a real concern for air travelers, with airports and planes seen as potential breeding grounds for bacteria.

Vatican tightens laws on sexual abuse of minors Friday March 29,2019

The Vatican issued tougher, comprehensive laws Friday March 29,2019 governing the sexual abuse of minors within the Vatican City State, Vatican offices and its diplomatic embassies abroad.

Pope Francis personally signed off on the new legislation that includes mandatory reporting of potential sexual abuse cases to Vatican authorities and the automatic dismissal of any employee found guilty of sexual abuse against minors.

The new laws also raise the statute of limitations for reporting a crime to 20 years following the 18th birthday of an alleged victim. The previous law was four years from the date of the alleged crime.

In 2013, Francis updated the Vatican City's laws to include criminalizing sexual violence against minors. This is the first time, however, that the Vatican has created a comprehensive and specific set of procedures and laws to follow regarding child sexual abuse for the Vatican City State and its offices abroad.

About 800 people live in Vatican City, and some 450 have Vatican citizenship, according to the Vatican. An estimated 5,000 priests, nuns and laypeople work for the Vatican in Rome and in its embassies abroad.

The new laws go into effect on June 1.

Brunei to punish gay sex and adultery with death by stoning effective from April 03,2019

A new law which comes into effect from next week will punish homosexual sex and adultery with death in the small southeast Asian kingdom of Brunei.

Beginning on April 3, 2019 any individuals found guilty of the offenses will be stoned to death, according to a new penal code. The punishment will be "witnessed by a group of Muslims."

The country's strict new laws were announced in 2014, and have been rolled out gradually. The latest phase of implementation, including the brutal new provisions, was quietly announced on the Brunei attorney general's website on December 29, 2018.

15 Airlines that no longer exist

1) Virgin America

Known for its colorful cabin lighting, quirky personality, and desire to offer a stylish option in US air travel, Virgin America seduced fliers and captured airline awards throughout its decade of existence.

Although Virgin Group head Richard Branson was only a minority owner, his stunts combined with innovative marketing approaches often grabbed headlines, such as when Branson headlined and crowd-surfed at a Dallas rally while the airline utilized Change.org to gather support for the right to fly from the city's Love Field.

Hearts broke across the country when Alaska Airlines was successful in purchasing the airline, and the final Virgin America flight took off on April 24, 2018.

2)Ted

When low-cost airline literally and figuratively took off in the United States in the mid-2000s, United felt the pressure to try its own hand and thus formed Ted. The airline began flying all-economy Airbus A320s in 2004, with a hub at Denver International Airport.

In-flight entertainment on Ted flights was limited to "Tedevision" and "TedTunes," and the airline sold teddy bears onboard. Ted's main competitors were Frontier Airlines and Delta's similar low-cost experiment, Song, and it lasted until 2009 when operations were folded back into United.

3)Pan Am

Pan Am, short for Pan American World Airways, is the story of a tiny, airmail carrier that hopped from Florida to Cuba and back beginning in 1927, to become the world's largest airline and an industry innovator until its demise in 1991.

Graduating from floatplanes to Boeing 747s, the airline pioneered flight routes, opened hotels (starting the InterContinental hotel chain), and symbolized the glamor of the jet age.

Oil crises, hijackings and attacks, and other operational setbacks forced Pan Am into dire financial straits, and the carrier ceased on December 4, 1991. Delta paid $1.39 billion to acquire Pan Am's assets, also honoring passenger tickets on the bankrupt carrier.

4)Loftleiðir

Flying from the United States to Europe with a stop in Iceland for cheap is now all too common, but the concept initiated as early as the 1940s with Loftleiðir, also known as Icelandic Airlines.

It flourished in the 1960s, earning the nickname "Hippie Express" for its popularity with young university students looking for affordable flights across the Atlantic.

In 1973 the airline merged with another Icelandic carrier, Flugfélag Íslands, and the result was the birth of Icelandair.

5)Air Berlin

Founded by Americans in 1978, Air Berlin initially operated holiday charter flights from West Berlin to Mediterranean vacation destinations. German reunification saw the airline rapidly expand, and Air Berlin became one of the largest European carriers.

Future plans and expansion hinged on eventually basing operations at Berlin's new Brandenburg Airport, which was originally due to open in 2011 but suffered rolling delays and is now not expected to open, if at all, until 2020.

Air Berlin scaled back on operations over several years and, with sustained financial losses, finally flew its final flight in October 2017. Nearly immediately Lufthansa swooped in and purchased 81 of its aircraft and employed more than 3,000 former Air Berlin employees, with Easyjet also taking a smaller piece of the Air Berlin pie.

6)Monarch Airlines

Primera isn't the only airline to abruptly fail and strand travelers far from home; the airline failed on the one-year anniversary of Monarch Airlines' own demise, which occurred on October 2, 2017.

The budget British airline, founded in 1967, flew vacationers to tourism hotspots around Europe, as well as to Israel.

Financial difficulties drove Monarch to desperately seek funding and, despite scoring some investment from Boeing in 2016, the airline shut down and stranded some 110,000 passengers who were later repatriated on other airlines in an operation costing £60 million ($78 million).

7) Primera Air

Primera may be in the headlines now for its spectacularly terrible failure and the stranding of thousands of passengers (and even its own crew) when it ceased operations this month without warning, but the airline has existed since 2003 and was a successful charter operation before it pivoted to ultra-low-cost scheduled flights primarily on European holiday routes.

Primera's attempt to offer long-haul, transatlantic flights between the United States and Europe then literally got off the ground in April 2018, only to last a few months before the entire operation collapsed on October 2, 2018.

8) Eos Airlines

The short-lived Eos Airlines, which existed only from 2004 to 2008, was an all-business-class carrier flying 48-seat Boeing 757s between New York-JFK and London's Stansted Airport.

It was a trend leader, heralding the slew of all-premium transatlantic airlines that also started up in the mid-2000s, like L'Avion, MAXJet and Silverjet. Before Eos could see through its plans to expand all-business-class flights to other US, European, and even South American destinations, the airline suddenly collapsed into bankruptcy.

9)Kingfisher Airlines

Travelers to India may be familiar with the Kingfisher brand of beer, but the name (and the beer's parent company) also entered the airline business, with Kingfisher Airlines commencing flights around India in 2005.

Its international service, to London, featured a bar in first class, and top-of-the-line entertainment systems and full-size pillows even in economy.

Consistent heavy financial losses drove Kingfisher to the brink of cessation several times, before the airline was forced to end operations in 2012 when India suspended its license and froze its accounts for non-payment of taxes.

10)Aloha Airlines

The end of World War II and the purchase of a military surplus plane led to the 1946 creation of Aloha Airlines, which operated flights between the US mainland and Hawaii, and to other Pacific islands.

Aloha was the main competitor to Hawaiian Airlines, but it was a fare war with the now-defunct island-hopper airline "go!" that drove Aloha to declare bankruptcy and cease operations in 2008.

11)ATA Airlines

Initially launching as charter company in 1973, ATA began scheduled operations in 1986 with flights from the Midwest to Florida, serving vacation routes that would ultimately become the airline's specialty despite a brief experiment with international flights.

Indianapolis and Chicago-Midway Airports served as ATA hubs. Following the economic effects of September 11, 2001, the airline suffered financial setback after setback, until declaring bankruptcy and ceasing operations on April 2, 2008, with flights still in the air.

During the bankruptcy, Southwest Airlines scooped up the ATA brand, its access at LaGuardia Airport, and the operating certificate for $7.5 million.

12)Midwest Airlines

This airline, founded in 1984 and with routes across the country chiefly from its Milwaukee and Kansas City hubs, ceased to exist in late 2010 when it merged into Frontier Airlines.

From the 1990s into the early 2000s, Midwest set itself apart from competitors by continuing to offer generous, complimentary hot meals when other airlines were cutting back on amenities.

Midwest's famous warm chocolate chip cookies, baked and served onboard every flight, outlasted the Midwest brand and continued on Frontier flights until that airline discontinued the cookie service in 2012.

13)Continental

Continental's long history began in 1937 when "Varney Speed Lines" rebranded and refocused, from flying airmail to carrying passengers.

he airline was responsible for many historic "firsts," such as hiring the first African-American pilot to work for any major US carrier (1963), inaugurating the first regular jet routes connecting islands across the Pacific (1968), flying the first non-stop route over 16 hours (Newark to Hong Kong, 2001) and offering 24-hour online support (2009).

Headquartered in Houston and with other hubs in Cleveland, Newark and Guam, Continental flew until it merged with United Airlines in 2012.

14)US Airways

Founded in 1937 as "All American Aviation," the airline rebranded to "Allegheny Airlines" in 1953, to "USAir" in 1979, when it was considered among the world's largest airlines, and finally to "US Airways" in 1997.

As US Airways, the carrier flew a wide domestic and international network from its hubs at Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington D.C.-National airports, and bought up Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA), Piedmont Airlines, and the failing Trump Shuttle.

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 landed on the Hudson River following engine failure from multiple bird strikes. All passengers and crew survived in the event, now termed the "Miracle on the Hudson."

US Airways merged with American Airlines in 2013, forming the world's largest airline, with the final US Airways-branded flight landed in April 2015.
