India Captain Virat Kohli betters own record en route 1000 ODI runs in a calendar year Wednesday Oct 24,2018

Indian skipper Virat Kohli(29) became the fastest batsman to aggregate 1000 runs in a calendar year during the 2nd ODI against West Indies at Visakhapatnam.

Virat Kohli completed the tally within just 11 innings, with five centuries to his credit at an average in excess of 142.

Virat Kohli managed to achieve this feat despite opting out of the recently concluded Asia Cup, surpassing his own record as well as that held by South African Hashim Amla. The Indian skipper had taken 15 innings to reach the milestone in 2012 emulating Amla who had accumulated the same tally in 2010.

Virat Kohli has scored 1000 runs for the sixth time in 2018 having achieved the same in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017 respectively as well. Sourav Ganguly, Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakarra are the other batsmen who have recorded the same figures with legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar leading the charts having registered the landmark on 7 instances.

Ethiopia Appoints Africa's First Female President

Ethiopia on Thursday Oct 25.10.2018 appointed a woman to the largely ceremonial position of president for the first time, further increasing female representation in the government of Africa's second most populous nation.

In a unanimous vote, Ethiopian lawmakers picked career diplomat Sahle-Work Zewde(68) to replace Mulatu Teshome who resigned in unclear circumstances.

Ethiopia's President Sahle-Work Zewde receives a book of the Constitution from her predecessor Mulatu Teshome at the Parliament in Addis Ababa on Thursday  Oct 25.2018

Sahle-Work, who was born in the capital Addis Ababa and attended university in France, has been Ethiopia's ambassador to France, Djibouti, Senegal and the regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Just prior to her appointment as president she was the UN's top official at the African Union. She is fluent in English and French as well as Amharic, Ethiopia's main language.

As president she is expected to serve two six-year terms

Sahle-Work becomes Africa's only serving female head of state, albeit in a ceremonial role.

A handful of African countries have in the recent past been led by female presidents with executive powers, including Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in Liberia (2006-18) and Joyce Banda in Malawi (2012-14).

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo announces his retirement from international cricket Thursday Oct 25.10.2018

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo announced his retirement from international cricket on Thursday Oct 25.10.2018

The 35-year-old Trinidadian, who made his West Indies debut in 2004, played 40 tests, 164 one-day internationals and 66 T20 internationals. His last appearance for his country came in the shortest format against Pakistan in September 2016.

“Today I want to confirm to the cricket world that I have officially retired from international cricket in all formats of the game,” he said in a statement.

“After 14 years when I made my debut for the West Indies, I still remember that moment I received the maroon cap before walking onto the Lords Cricket Ground against England in July 2004. The enthusiasm and passion I felt then, I have kept with me throughout my career. However, I must accept that for me to preserve my longevity as a professional cricketer, I must do as others before have done, leave the international arena for the next generation of players.”

Bravo, known for his big-hitting ability and a wide range of slower deliveries, ends his international stint with 2,200 runs at an average of 31.42 in tests.

In ODIs, he finished with 2,968 runs at 25.36, while claiming 199 wickets at an economy rate of 5.41.

Bravo plays for the Chennai Super Kings franchise in the Indian Premier League and has also represented T20 outfits in England, Australia, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Caribbean.

2018 Nobel Peace Prize - Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad wins for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 to Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, such war crimes. Denis Mukwege is the helper who has devoted his life to defending these victims. Nadia Murad is the witness who tells of the abuses perpetrated against herself and others. Each of them in their own way has helped to give greater visibility to war-time sexual violence, so that the perpetrators can be held accountable for their actions.

The physician Denis Mukwege has spent large parts of his adult life helping the victims of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since the Panzi Hospital was established in Bukavu in 1999, Dr. Mukwege and his staff have treated thousands of patients who have fallen victim to such assaults. Most of the abuses have been committed in the context of a long-lasting civil war that has cost the lives of more than six million Congolese.

Denis Mukwege is the foremost, most unifying symbol, both nationally and internationally, of the struggle to end sexual violence in war and armed conflicts. His basic principle is that “justice is everyone’s business”. Men and women, officers and soldiers, and local, national and international authorities alike all have a shared responsibility for reporting, and combating, this type of war crime. The importance of Dr. Mukwege’s enduring, dedicated and selfless efforts in this field cannot be overstated. He has repeatedly condemned impunity for mass rape and criticised the Congolese government and other countries for not doing enough to stop the use of sexual violence against women as a strategy and weapon of war.

Nadia Murad is herself a victim of war crimes. She refused to accept the social codes that require women to remain silent and ashamed of the abuses to which they have been subjected. She has shown uncommon courage in recounting her own sufferings and speaking up on behalf of other victims.
Nadia Murad is a member of the Yazidi minority in northern Iraq, where she lived with her family in the remote village of Kocho. In August 2014 the Islamic State (IS) launched a brutal, systematic attack on the villages of the Sinjar district, aimed at exterminating the Yazidi population. In Nadia Murad’s village, several hundred people were massacred. The younger women, including underage children, were abducted and held as sex slaves. While a captive of the IS, Nadia Murad was repeatedly subjected to rape and other abuses. Her assaulters threatened to execute her if she did not convert to their hateful, inhuman version of Islam.

Nadia Murad is just one of an estimated 3 000 Yazidi girls and women who were victims of rape and other abuses by the IS army. The abuses were systematic, and part of a military strategy. Thus they served as a weapon in the fight against Yazidis and other religious minorities.
After a three-month nightmare Nadia Murad managed to flee. Following her escape, she chose to speak openly about what she had suffered. In 2016, at the age of just 23, she was named the UN’s first Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking.

This year marks a decade since the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 1820 (2008), which determined that the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict constitutes both a war crime and a threat to international peace and security. This is also set out in the Rome Statute of 1998, which governs the work of the International Criminal Court. The Statute establishes that sexual violence in war and armed conflict is a grave violation of international law.  A more peaceful world can only be achieved if women and their fundamental rights and security are recognised and protected in war.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize is firmly embedded in the criteria spelled out in Alfred Nobel’s will. Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad have both put their personal security at risk by courageously combating war crimes and seeking justice for the victims. They have thereby promoted the fraternity of nations through the application of principles of international law.

2018 Global Hunger Index -

This year’s Global Hunger Index reveals a distressing gap between the current rate of progress in the fight against hunger and undernutrition and the rate of progress needed to eliminate hunger and alleviate human suffering.

The 2018 Global Hunger Index - published jointly by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe - tracks the state of hunger worldwide and spotlights those places where action to address hunger is most urgently needed.

The results show that in many countries, and in terms of the global average, hunger and undernutrition have declined since 2000, indicating real improvements in the lives of millions of men, women, and children. At the same time, while progress has been robust in some parts of the world, in other parts hunger and undernutrition persist or have even worsened. In too many areas, growing numbers of people still suffer the indignity of hunger and the insecurity of forced displacement

Google Doodle Honours Iconic 'Bambi' Artist on His 108th Birthday Thursday Oct 25,2018

Today's Google doodle celebrates the 108th birthday of Tyrus Wong, iconic Chinese-born American artist, who is known for some of the most popular and defining images in the American pop culture.

Wong, who is considered as one of the most influential Asian-American artists of the 20th Century, is best remembered for his work on ‘Bambi’, the 1942 Walt Disney film. Interestingly, Wong never met Walt Disney personally. However, his enchanting work which was heavily suffused with Eastern painting styles caught Walt’s eye and eventually became the inspiration for the animated feature Bambi, which changed the course of animation art, and continues to be an inspiration to contemporary artists.

He drew inspiration from Song dynasty’s bold art of classical Chinese paintings. Tyrus Wong was born Wong Gen Yeo, in a village in southern China's Guangdong Province on October 25, 1910. When he was 10-year-old, Wong and his father traveled to America, and lived in Sacramento, before eventually settling in Los Angeles.

Overcoming adversity, poverty, and racial discrimination, Wong used his interpretations of traditional oriental art along with his experiences of working as a Depression- era muralist, California watercolorist, and film production illustrator, to become one of the bohemian artists whose creativity shaped the cultural, artistic life of Los Angeles during the 1930s and 40s
