Derbyshire Sign Cheteshwar Pujara

Derbyshire have signed India Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara on a short-term deal for their final three County Championship fixtures of the season.

Cheteshwar Pujara was not named in the squad for the forthcoming one-dayers against England
Cheteshwar Pujara averaged only 22.00 from 10 innings in the five-match Test series
against England
Cheteshwar Pujara has since returned to India and is not currently due to join up with Derbyshire until early September 2014
That would leave him free to make his debut against Glamorgan on 9 September.
"Pujara joining us at this stage of the season is a real boost for the lads," said Derbyshire elite performance director Graeme Welch. "We're an ambitious team and have an exciting group of players who are developing fast.
"With Shivnarine Chanderpaul now back in the West Indies preparing for Test match action and Marcus North focusing on our one-day campaign, Pujara will bring an added dimension to the side as we look to finish our Championship season strongly."

Derbyshire's remaining County Championship Division Two fixtures

31 August-3 September: v Worcestershire (Derby, 11:00 BST)
9-12 September: v Glamorgan (Cardiff, 10:30 BST)
15-18 September: v Surrey (The Oval, 10:30 BST)
23-26 September: v Leicestershire (Derby, 10:30 BST)
Derbyshire, relegated a year ago, currently lie seventh in Division Two, with promotion hopes extremely slim as they stand 62 points adrift (with a game in hand) of second-placed Hampshire.
They are 35 points ahead of bottom club Leicestershire, who they play in their final game.

India's First Ethanol-Run Bus Rolls out in Nagpur

India's first pilot project to test ethanol-run environment-friendly public buses was launched in Nagpur by Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday Aug 22,2014

The "Green Bus" project is a brain child of Mr Gadkari, who claimed the carbon-dioxide emissions from the bus will be as low as 75 per cent to 90 per cent -- depending on the purity of ethanol.

Nonetheless, the emissions will be monitored for the next three months by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, the state and the central governments.

Ethanol is produced from molasses, a by-product of sugar mills. The Purti Group, of which Gadkari is a shareholder, runs several sugar mills and also sells ethanol.

The warship has been built by the state-owned Gardenreach Shipbuilders in Kolkata and is the first vessel in the Navy whose all weapon systems are manufactured indigenously.

Speaking at the ceremony, Defence Minister said, "One of the initiative of the government of India is indegenous manufacturing of defence equipment. I am sure INS Kamorta will serve this country effectively for a very long time."

INS Kamorta, which has enhanced stealth features make it less susceptible to detection, will form part of the Vishakhapatnam-based Eastern Command.

Kamorta is the first of four ASW stealth corvettes designed by Indian Navy's in-house organisation, Directorate of Naval Design (DND), and built by GRSE, a statement from the Eastern Naval Command said.

It would carry short-range Surface-to-Air missiles (SAM) and Active Towed Array Decoy System (ATDS).

2014 Bihar by-elections Thursday Aug 21,2014

The fate of the grand alliance of Nitish Kumar, Lalu Prasad and the Congress, which was recently formed to take on the resurgent BJP, was sealed with peaceful polling in the 10 Assembly seats in Bihar where by-elections were held on Thursday Aug 21,2014

But the voters in the state appeared to be less-than-enthusiastic about taking part in the by-polls, which had been billed as the 'semi-final for power' ahead of next year's Assembly elections in Bihar.
Only 46.42 % polling was recorded in the 10 constituencies where voting was held during the day.

This was about 6 % less than the polling recorded in the same constituencies in the 2010 Assembly elections.

Polling was held in Bhagalpur, Banka, Parbatta, Rajnagar (reserved), Mohania (reserved), Hajipur, Chhapra, Narkatiyaganj, Jale and Mohiuddinagar constituencies.

The BJP had won six of the seats in the last Assembly elections while the RJD and the JD(U) has bagged three and one seat each.

The counting of votes will take place on August 25,2014

Supreme Court of India(SCI)questions NDA Govt for delay in appointing Opposition Leader Friday Aug 22,2014

An assertive Supreme Court, which had consistently kept the UPA government on tenterhooks by questioning its policies and showing zero tolerance for corruption, is continuing with its aggression and activism against the NDA regime.

The SCI  on Friday Aug 22,2014 took on the NDA Govt for the seventh time in the three months since it assumed office, questioning the delay and lack of consensus in choosing a Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, which has put the selection of the Lokpal in limbo and will affect appointments to several other constitutional posts in the CBI, CVC and NHRC.

The LoP is a key member in the selection panel for all these posts

As the second largest party in the Lok Sabha with 44 seats, Congress has been demanding the LoP post for itself but the Speaker, taking into consideration the opinion rendered by the Attorney General, has rejected it by saying the party does not have the requisite 10 per cent of seats - 55 in the 543-member House

According to the Speaker, the Congress, which has 44 members in the Lok Sabha but claims the support of 60 UPA lawmakers, cannot officially get the LoP post as it lacks the mandated 10 per cent of the strength of the 543- member House.
The ruling BJP, which is in no mood to grant the LoP status to the Congress, has cited past precedents when there was no LoP during Congress governments in 1980 and 1984.
The issue has become a major bone of contention between the BJP and the Congress, which is in no mood to give up its claim. The Congress' argument is that not only is an LoP a democratic safeguard against the brute majority of the NDA in the lower house, the parliamentary post is needed to clear appointments to several anti-graft and rights bodies like the CVC, CBI, Lokpal and NHRC.
As a counter to the precedents cited by the BJP, the Congress has maintained that the situation was different two decades ago when the LoP had no role in clearing such key appointments.
"The decision of the Speaker was in utter disregard to the law and appears to be clearly influenced and coloured by the partisan agenda of the BJP-led government," said Sharma.
Indicating the mood in the government, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said the Congress should respect the Speaker's decision.

In this context, a bench headed by Chief Justice R.M. Lodha stepped in and decided to go into the issue of interpreting the provision of LoP in the Lok Sabha for appointing members of statutory bodies in a situation where there is no recognised LoP as in the current scenario.
The SCI also gave the government an ultimatum to decide the issue in two weeks

Slamming the absence of the LoP, Lodha said, "The person holding the post is the voice representing the view different from the government. Statute presupposes the existence of a LoP. Important appointments like the Lokpal cannot be kept in cold storage for want of such a post. Why does not the government realize that LoP is also essential for a fair selection to other constitutional posts also?"
The court granted the government two weeks to make its stand clear and come prepared at the next date of hearing on September 09,2014
Noting that the matter is very significant, the bench rejected the plea of the government, which sought four weeks to prepare on the issue.
