World AIDS Day, observed on 1 December every year, is dedicated to raising awareness of theAIDS Pandemic  caused by the spread of HIV infection.
  • AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history.
  • World AIDS Day was first conceived in August 1987 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the 'World Health Organisation(WHO)
  • The Joint UN Programmes on AIDS/HIV (UNAIDS) became operational in 1996, and it took over the planning and promotion of World AIDS Day.Rather than focus on a single day, UNAIDS created the World AIDS Campaign in 1997 to focus on year-round communications, prevention and education.

  • Each year's World AIDS Day theme is chosen by the World AIDS Campaign's Global Steering Committee after extensive consultation with people, organizations and government agencies involved in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS

2013 Pirelli Calendar Unveiled

The globally acclaimed Magnum photographer Steve McCurry unveiled the 2013 Pirelli calendar during an official event held November 27,2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Launched in 1964, the calendar was born as a racy way to promote the brand's tyres. With its naked pinups shot in exotic locations from Mallorca to Tunisia to the Bahamas, the calendar quickly took on bigger proportions, becoming a fashion icon that attracted top-tier photographers.

All of the photographs were taken in the streets of Rio and its favelas. Together, they shed light on the history and evolution of the iconic city, documentary-style.

In another major shift with the past, all of the women (models, actresses and singers) featured in the 2013 edition of the Pirelli calendar 2013 are covered up, while previous editions were renowned for their artistic portrayals of female nudity.

The 40th edition of the calendar includes 34 color photographs, including 23 portraits of actresses, singers and models, nine photographs depicting Rio de Janeiro’s everyday life, and two pictures of graffiti art and murals.

The 2013 edition marked the third time it's been shot in Brazil, following the 2005 and 2010 editions.

Excess power from Delhi cannot be given to TN, says Central Govt

The Centre on Thursday Nov 29,2012 informed the Supreme Court that the additional power surrendered by the NCT of Delhi could not be allocated to Tamil Nadu without compromising the grid security as the critical transmission elements in the North-South corridor of the southern region were fully utilised.

In its counter to the suit filed by Tamil Nadu, the Centre said “this is based on the Total Transfer Capability and ATC of the inter-regional links as well as the north to south corridor within the southern region.

A Bench Chief Justice Altamas Kabir and Justice J. Chelameswar adjourned the hearing to December 4 to enable Tamil Nadu to file its rejoinder.

TN Assembly 60 Years Celebrations - Friday Nov 30,2012

Except for the periods of 1952-1956 and 2010-2011, the Assembly always functioned from the Fort St. George.

In the last 60 years, only once did the Assembly meet outside Chennai. That was in 1959 and the Arranmore Palace, Udhagamandalam, hosted the legislature.

The Rajaji days are remembered for landmark laws to protect tenants of farm lands and landless agriculturists.
Note C. Rajagopalachari became the first elected chief minister of the Madras Presidency in 1937 as well as its first non-elected CM in 1952

When DMKcaptured power in 1967 and its founder C.N. Annadurai became Chief Minister, the Hindu Marriage Act was amended to recognise “self-respect marriages” or those marriages free of religious rituals.

10-year-long rule (1977-1987) of the government, headed by M.G. Ramachandran of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, was noted for various measures in the area of revenue administration. Notably, the system of hereditary village officers such as “karnam” was abolished at one stroke
After the Supreme Court delivered the Mandal Commission judgment in November 1992, settingthe ceiling for reservation in education and employment at 50 per cent, the Assembly responded through legislation aimed at safeguarding the existing 69 per cent quota for Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes and Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes.

May 3, 1952: Many parts of the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka were part of the Madras State. To accommodate the 375 members of the Assembly, this building was constructed on the Wallajah Road side of the Estate. It later came to be known as Children's Theatre. In 1953, when Andhra Pradesh was formed, the old building at Fort St. George was considered sufficient.

As a matter of convention, Chief Ministers are members of the Legislative Assembly. However, in Tamil Nadu which had a bi-cameral legislature till 1986, there were two Chief Ministers who were members of the Legislative Council. C. Rajagopalachari, seen here with E.V.R. Periyar, was one. He became Chief Minister in 1952,after the first General Elections.
