BJP Names N Biren Singh As Chief Minister-Designate Of Manipur Monday March 13,2017

N Biren Singh, who left the Congress after a falling out with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, is set to be his successor. 



The BJP today Monday March 13,2017 named the 55-year-old as its chief ministerial candidate. But the political uncertainty seemed far from over as Okram Ibobi Singh, who maintains the Congress too has numbers to form a government following an inconclusive election verdict on Saturday, is yet to resign from his post. Manipur Governor Najma Heptullah can only invite a party to form the government once he does.

Earlier in the day, in a flurry of fast-changing developments, Mr Ibobi Singh said he wouldn't resign before saying he would. But he maintained that the Congress, which at 28 won four fewer seats than the majority, had bandied enough support to stake claim to form a government. "Our party is intact. Trinamool Congress members are also with us. There is sufficient time. Yesterday, when I met Governor, I requested her to start the process. She said she'd need my resignation. I will submit it either today or tomorrow."

But Governor Najma Heptullah said today the she was satisfied with the BJP's numbers after the party, which won 21 seats, said it also had the backing of 32 legislators. "I was satisfied that they (BJP) have support of 32 MLAs...(but) as per rules, until the present chief minister resigns, the process of next government formation cannot be started," she told
