Indian stocks plummet as threat of war triggers all-round selling Thursday Sep 29,2016

Indian stock markets posted their biggest decline since the Brexit vote on Thursday Sep 29,2016, after the army announced that it had carried out "surgical strikes" across the Line of Control (LoC) on suspected militants preparing to infiltrate from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

After the press briefing on the surgical strikes by Director General of Military Operations Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, the stocks plunged up to 4 per cent amid concerns that foreign investors, who have pumped in about Rs 50,000 crore into domestic equity so far this year, may exit the country in case hostilities escalate.

The benchmark Sensex plummeted by over 465 points, the biggest single-day fall in three months, after news of the strikes.

The 30-share benchmark index settled at 27,827.53, down 465.28 points, or 1.64 per cent - its biggest single-day fall since June 24 and weakest closing since August 26 when it closed at 27,782.25.

The 50-share NSE Nifty, which cracked below 8,600-level to hit a low of 8,558.25 during trade but managed to recover apart of the losses and settled down 153.90 points, or 1.76 per cent, at 8,591.25.

Note

What constitutes surgical strikes?

A surgical strike in military terms is an operation that is intended to take out a specific target, with no or limited collateral damage.

In Army’s terms, it is a fast operation carried out by a small unit, or it could be a well aimed missile. By the Air Force, it can be an aircraft targeting a single building or vehicle, as opposed to carpet bombing an area.

The strike across the LoC was reportedly carried out by Para Commandos and Ghatak platoons of the Indian Army. These are members of the Special Forces under the Parachute regiment who are trained specifically for such operations, and specialised teams part of infantry units. They are trained to parachute in to enemy territory and conduct precise missions, or to sneak in quietly across enemy lines.

Surgical strikes are the alternative to sending in troops and tanks, creating a situation that could escalate to full-blown war. Governments often deny them or deal with the aftermath diplomatically.

Supreme Court of India(SCI)Sets Aside the Patna High Court order granting bail to RJD leader Shahabuddin Friday Sep 30,2016

Controversial RJD leader Shahabuddin was back in prison 20 days after his release, as the Supreme Court of India(SCI)on Friday Sep 30,2016  set aside the Patna High Court order granting him bail in a murder case saying the discretion to release must be applied in “judicious manner” and “not as a matter of course”.

“The order passed by the High Court granting bail to the respondent-accused (Shahabuddin) is set aside and the state is directed to take all consequential steps, inter alia, for taking him to custody forthwith,” a Bench comprising Justices PC Ghose and Amitava Roy said.

The Bench, which clarified that it was not expressing any opinion on the merits of the case pending against the RJD leader, asked the Bihar government and the concerned court to take “all steps as contemplated in law to dispose of the case, as early as possible”.

Referring to various judgements on bail, it said, “Judged on entire conspectus of the attendant facts and circumstances, and considering the stage of the present case before the trial court where charge-sheet has already been submitted, together with pending proceedings against the respondent-accused as on date, and his recorded antecedents in the various decisions of this court, we are thus unable to sustain the impugned order of the High Court granting bail to him.”

In its 10-page order, the apex court dealt with various aspects of the submissions and said, “Although it has to be accepted that the respondent-accused has already been granted bail by the concerned courts in other cases, a duty is cast upon the court in addressing such a prayer in a case on its own merit, and while applying its discretion, it must be applied in a judicious manner and not as a matter of course.”

Shahabuddin was granted bail by the Patna High Court on September 7 in the Rajiv Roshan murder case and was released from Bhagalpur jail on September 10. He has already remained in jail for 11 years in connection with several cases.

Roshan, the eye witness to the gruesome killings of two of his younger siblings, was also killed few days before his proposed testimony in the murder case of his brothers

Israel's Former President and PM Shimon Peres Funeral Today Friday Sep 30,2016

In a career spanning seven decades, Shimon Peres held nearly every major office, serving twice as prime minister and as president from 2007 to 2014.

He won the 1994 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for his role in negotiating the Oslo accords, which envisioned an independent Palestinian state.

Shimon Peres will be buried next to his so-called 'partner in peace' Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated by a Jewish nationalist in 1995.

The funeral was Jerusalem's biggest security operation for at least two decades with 8,000 police and soldiers lining the streets as the country's former prime minister was laid to rest.

On the streets of Jerusalem, as pedestrians were held up at cordons as VIPs left, members of the public were discussing Peres' legacy.

The funeral took place on Mount Herzl, where Peres is buried alongside other Israeli leaders - but far from the more private grave of his wife Sonia, who died in 2011.

Mourners came from all of Israel's communities: rabbis in black coats, leaders of Jewish immigrants from Ethiopia holding ceremonial colourful umbrellas, Imams dressed in white, and representatives from churches.

The singer David D'or reduced many of the people gathered, Israelis and foreign visitors alike, to tears when he sang one of Peres' favourites - 'Our Father, Our King,' in Hebrew.

SHIMON PERES: HOW FATHER OF THE NEW ISRAEL HAD AN UNPRECEDENTED SEVEN DECADES IN POLITICS

In an unprecedented seven-decade political career, Shimon Peres has filled nearly every position in Israeli public life.
—Shimon Perski is born on Aug. 2, 1923 in Vishneva, then part of Poland. He moves to pre-state Palestine in 1934 with his immediate family and later enters politics where he becomes a protegĂ© of Israel's founding father David Ben-Gurion.
—In 1952, at age 29, he becomes the youngest person ever to serve as director-general of Israel's Defense Ministry. There he is credited with arming Israel's military almost from scratch and creating what is widely believed to be a nuclear arsenal.

—In 1959, Peres is first elected to the Knesset, Israel's parliament, serving almost uninterrupted until 2007. He is appointed deputy defense minister.
—In 1969, he is appointed minister of immigrant absorption, the first in a long line of Cabinet position to follow
—In 1977, he suffers defeat while running for prime minister, losing to Menachem Begin, whose Likud party rises to power for the first time.
—In 1984, he finally becomes prime minister after tying with Likud's Yitzhak Shamir and agreeing to share the job in a rotation. As prime minister, he disentangles Israeli troops from Lebanon and rescues the economy from triple-digit inflation.
— In 1992, he becomes foreign minister in the Labor party-led government, serving under his longtime rival Yitzhak Rabin. Together they work to forge the first peace accord with the Palestinians and a peace accord with Jordan. In 1994, they share the Nobel Peace Prize with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
—In 1995, after Rabin is assassinated by a Jewish ultranationalist opposed to Israel's peace moves, Peres became acting prime minister. Just six months later he is defeated by Benjamin Netanyahu in elections.
—In 2007, he is elected president, a largely ceremonial role but one that earns him the kind of national admiration that eluded him throughout his lengthy career.
—In 2014, Peres completes his presidential term, remaining active at his peace center until suffering a debilitating stroke on Sept. 13.

Israel's Former President and PM Shimon Peres, an Enduring Pillar From Israel’s Founding Era, Dies at 93 Wednesday Sep 28,2016

Shimon Peres, one of the last surviving pillars of Israel’s founding generation, who did more than anyone to build up his country’s formidable military might, then worked as hard to establish a lasting peace with Israel’s Arab neighbors, died on Wednesday Sep 28,2016 in a Tel Aviv area hospital. He was 93.

His death was announced by his son Nehemya Peres, who is known as Chemi, and his personal physician and son-in-law Dr. Rafi Walden, outside the Sheba Medical Center, where he had been hospitalized for the last two weeks.

Shimon Peres died just over two weeks after suffering a stroke. Doctors kept him largely unconscious and on a breathing tube since then in the hope that it would give his brain a chance to heal. But he deteriorated as the nation he once led watched his last battle play out publicly and as leaders from around the world sent wishes for his recovery.

As prime minister (twice); as minister of defense, foreign affairs, finance and transportation; and, until 2014, as president, Mr. Peres never left the public stage during Israel’s seven decades.

Shimon Peres led the creation of Israel’s defense industry, negotiated key arms deals with France and Germany and was the prime mover behind the development of Israel’s nuclear weapons. But he was consistent in his search for an accommodation with the Arab world, a search that in recent years left him orphaned as Israeli society lost interest, especially after the upheavals of the 2011 Arab Spring led to tumult on its borders.

Historic Handshake

In his efforts to help Israel find acceptance in a hostile region, Shimon. Peres’s biggest breakthrough came in 1993, when he worked out a plan with the Palestine Liberation Organization for self-government in Gaza and in part of the West Bank, both of which were occupied by Israel.
After months of secret negotiation with representatives of the P.L.O., conducted with the help of Norwegian diplomats and intellectuals, Mr. Peres persuaded his old political rival Yitzhak Rabin, then the prime minister, to accept the plan. It became known as the Oslo Accords.
Mr. Peres, who was serving as foreign minister, signed the accords on Sep 13,1993  in a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House as Mr. Rabin and their old enemy Yasir Arafat, the chairman of the P.L.O., looked on and, with some prodding by President Bill Clinton, shook hands.
It was a gesture both unprecedented and historic. Up to that time, Israel had refused to negotiate directly with the P.L.O. Mr. Peres broke the taboo, and the impasse.
